I just finished my first AR and want to buy another rifle.  with the craze and scarcity of ammo now would it be foolish to do something in a different caliber.  I have always liked the mini 14 and was thinking that would be a good gun considering I could keep buying the same ammo in bulk.

Or
Do people like to have a variety of calibers.  Seems tougher in these economic times.

I would  consider something besides a Mini.

i have heard that also.
I am thinking maybe a saiga in 7.62x39
ammo seems reasonable and is a good gun

Arsenal 106FR = AK in .223

You have the AR, now you need the reliability of an AK.

But dont get a 5.56 AK.

i love the wooden stock ar!

why would you buy another 223 rifle that uses a different kind of magazine?

Build another AR in a different configuration.  If you dont ahave at least 3 ARs your not done with the platform yet.  And that is a conservative number.

I have a stainless mini, use it for a car gun.  This was back when they were $379 out the door. The arfcommers love to dump on the mini but it has some good characteristics in its own right.   Here's my rundown on the mini-14:

PROS:

1.  Decent supply of aftermarket stocks, scope mounts, etc.
2.  Costs less than AR.
3.  Super-simple, super reliable.  Sort of like an AK;  will fire when abused.
4.  Stainelss models make good car or boat guns.
5.  Shoots .223 / 5.56 ammo.
6.  Foolproof trigger housing safety.
7.  M1A fun in small package.
8.  Accuracy is fine for minute-of-thug.

CONS:

1.  Parts have to be hand fitted, not interchangeable like AR.
2.  Cost differential is much less on new models vs. AR.
3.  Accuracy is nowhere near that of off the shelf AR.
4.  Mags are more expensive and less readily available (all aftermarket mags are junk, must use factory Ruger).
5.  Iron sights are cruder than AR.
6.  Lacks modular design of AR upper/lower system.
7.  Trigger is hard and creepy.
8.  Ruger has a history of treasonous behavior concerning RKBA.

I'd say that when ARs were $1000 and Minis were $379, that was one thing.  Now the new Minis are within shouting distance of the price of a good AR.  I'd probably pass now.

You're satisfied with one AR?

BRD is definitly setting in, I was just looking at something a little differnt

I have a 16" bushy carbine
so maybe next I will go 16" middy and change it up a bit. maybe add some tan instead of an all black rifle.  Who knows. I guess now that I have one it will be easier to backorder things and wait, plus I bought 25 mags the past few months so why do something totally different.

thanks

Hi, my name is TW and I have BRD.

I don't even have my freakin' rifle yet. WTF!!!! When I get mine, (Hopefully Feb. 3) I will build it as a tactical config. Then buy a varmint upper with scope. Then, I will see where we are politically, and go from there.

No more calibers for me.

I'm also thinking about a Mini.

After you have a few AR's you'll have to explore the Dark Side!!

Well I'm going to go ahead and suggest you buy a few more lowers and LPK's. Once BRD really takes hold, you'll be glad you did.

You could build a 6.8 carbine, a 20in. varminter, another 5.56 free floated carbine, etc...

Look at all the different stocks and optics available!

I really like the two A2s you have with the older style triangular handguards.  I thought I was the only one who liked them that way.
