It really happened.
I know the guy that took the pictures, well, all except the injured guy; that's not related.

The rifle did split like that, along the rifling grooves, because the shooter left the bore sighter in the muzzle.  No injuries.

The receiver was re-barreled and returned to service after being inspected and Magna-Fluxed.

The rifle wasn't "banged up" at all, just the muzzle split.  The rest of it was fine.
