You answered your own question with that last bit.

As long as there are consumers of a product, there will be providers.

spam filtering tech has come a LONG way...

The only time you really get hammered with spam is when you use a free webmail service like hotmail....

Most ISPs use a program like SpamCop to block spam....

A lot of it got cut out when the ISP's started getting sued for letting that stuff go out.

Even the free emails nowdays do a decent job of filtering it before it even gets to you.

As to why it still exist. Because somewhere someone still buys whatever they are pedaling believe it or not. IE they work.

It's like the nigerian scam letters, people STILL get taken by those.

I don't see any spam unless I go in the Spam Junk folder, in which case there is hundreds. 90% of it seems to be from Chinese IPs.

This. It costs as much to send 10 emails as it does to send 10,000. And if even one recipient hits... he's made money.

Bayesian spam filtering has really hurt the spam business. So much so, that a lot of spam I see today has virtually no text in the message body. Just a subject line, often starting with "RE:" so the receiver will think it's a response to a message they sent and the message body containing nothing but a URL (a link.) This kind of spam is difficult to filter out because there is very little information to go on. The only way to really kill spam for good is to verify the sender. That will probably turn out be an impossible task.

And it cost them nothing to send 1M emails in a few minutes. They hack, steal, or use free email accounts. Why would you want to stop doing something that takes next to no time, costs little to nothing, and has the potential to return big every now and again?

Yeah, they've come a REAL long way, I keep having problems
sending e-mails to people, even when they TELL their provider
to allow my e-mails, just like the illegals, spammers are winning
