Is anyone here in to baseball cards?

Over the past several years I've been given collections of baseball cards that belonged to my father and aunts when they were younger. There must be over one thousand, dating from the early 60's up through the 80's, but they're pretty much unsorted. I spent a few hours going through them and looked up a few dozen, some are worth 50 cents, 2 bucks, 5 bucks, 10 bucks, etc. I imagine there's probably a few hundred dollars worth of baseball cards here, but I really don't want to turn this in to a hobby. Does anyone have any experience in dealing with baseball card collections? Should I trust an appraiser, or just try and come up with a wholesale value and sell them as is?

Toss them in the garbage. That's what widows and mothers have done over the years. It helps to increase the value of surviving cards held by collectors.

At least it's a manageable amount.

If it were me, I'd toss them into the back of the closet and forget about em.
If you want to get rid of em, toss em on ebay, but don't expect much.
The card market is dead and rotten, long time, and I don't see it ever coming back.

Theres several publications like Becket and Tuff Stuff that have listings for your cards that could help you sort out the treasure from the garbage. For example Mickey Mantles True rookie card was the 1952 Bowman but the 1952 Topps is considerd the most valuble of the two cards selling sometimes for 80,000.I'm not saying your sitting on a goldmine but you should take the time and go through it.

Agreed, I wouldn't sell without going through them.

But at the same time, I'd buy protectors so condition doesn't get any worse.
Or pages and get them into an album.

This is assuming they are in any sort of good condition to begin with.
Further, if selling, it would be helpful to at least list the key cards in the collection.
