I recently build a new PC, used a Sony, works fine.

Nec Optiarc used to be a really great line of drives, but then they started rebadging Liteon's with their 7220 series.  So your best bet is get a liteon and make sure it has the latest firmware.

Another +1 on Sony.  I put a LOT of hours on my drives.  I have 2 DVD burners in my main PC, and always have a DVD in playing on another desktop (linux).
Lite-On's burn out in short order.  The current batch of Sony's have far outlasted any L.O.

I've got two Pioneer DVR-2810's. I love 'em.

Edit: Oops. You said DVD-RW.. Don't have.

Both my Lite-Ons seemed to have dogged down to nothing within weeks of each other, I installed both of them just over 2 years ago.

+1 for Samsung Drives.  Very happy with them.  They usually run about 5 bucks more than sony or lite-on drives.

Stay away from Pioneer. I've had way too many of them die early on me.

Lite-On is ok for a cheap drive. They can be a bit loud.

My LG blu-ray drive has been awesome so far....I dunno how their non-blu-ray drive stacks up....

We have had good luck over the years with Plexstor.

I like the Asus SATA DVDR/Ws.  I have used dozens over the last several months with no problems, and they are quieter than the Pioneers, and MUCH quieter than the Lite-on drives.  I have also had good luck with the Sony/NEC drives.

SATA kicks ass - and this is coming from a SCSI guru.  I use Plextors, and I've had good luck with them.  No Lightscribe though.

Lite-On makes most of the larger OEM's drives....

lite on, memorex are the two I use. Have had good luck with them.

Becareful on the sata. I have had a few things not boot to cd because of driver issues, like ghost and hirams, but other things seemed to work fine.
