Out west we don't have many trees and I don't want to kill the ones I have....

Not an aspen..we do have those here...some kind of hardwood, maybe elm or poplar...

Aspen is a hardwood, member of the poplar family.  It is my job to know trees, pretty sure that is an aspen.

Aspen has a white smooth looking bark, similar to a white birch.

lol.

I have a couple of them in my yard. They are great trees and they grow fast if you soak them. Beautiful in the summer and fall. They need to be groomed though on their lower extremities. They tend to grow "beards" of shoots off their trunks. They can also be kinda messy.

Hard to know EVERY tree that grows in the US.  I only know 99% of them.

Cottonwoods must not grow on the East Coast. They are a mountain-river species.

Bet you haven't seen a Pinon Pine in VA either

Now can you name the tree in the background?  Smooth, red bark.

Not all of them. Some can be covered in boils or other marks that can make it look like something besides an Aspen. The Cottonwood is a poplar, just like the Aspen. Sometimes you cannot tell the difference.

FAIL!!  Cottonwood.  Can be properly pruned best during the winter (dormant season).

Don't cut limbs off flush with the stem;  cut just outside the branch collar. How to Prune a Tree
