I bought my wife a cheap $50 IPod shuffle for her to listen to as she embarks on her new walking program.
It is one GB, and the kid at Best Buy said it will hold 250 songs-is he right?
250 songs sounds like a lot for this little postage stamp sized gadget.

I have the same kind and keep around 150-175 songs on mine...but I listen to a lot of rock, which are longer songs.

For pop music, 200 would be no problem.

If you rip your mp3 files at a lower bitrate, you can fit a lot more...like several hundred

Damn that seem like a lot of songs for such a small package!  At 51, I'm amazed at what's out there!

You do realize that the computer on your desktop has more processing power and memory capacity than the computers used during the APOLLO space missions, right?

This.

I prefer mine no lower than 192kbps, resulting in less music being with me at any given time.  Were I taking a long trip, I might rip some CDs at 96kbps just to fit more music on my mp3 player.

Yeah, it's a neat little gadget for sure. Good sounding for a package that size, too.

The thing is, the quality of the MP3 determines the file size. Much like digital photographs.
The more you compress it, the smaller it gets, but the worse it looks/sounds.

At good quality, you can fit a number of albums on 1gb of space.
I would rather go for fewer tracks, more quality, and just change your selections more often.

The computer in your typical pocket calculator could run circles around the Apollo machines.
