The map update price is probably part of their business model like ink cartridges are for printer makers.

would you condiser downloading a bittorrent of the full product before paying for it.. ––as an evaluation only type thing ––

then being too busy to go buy a legit version ... "legal "  then you could do that  .

Yes, it is.

I mean, really - how many new roads could have been built in the last year?

I'd be willing to pay $20 annually, but 70 bucks?.....C'mon.

Does the unit stop working after a year, or just nag you about it until you update?

Neither.....the maps are just out of date, which isn't so much of an issue in the country but city streets seem to change.

Buy a used copy of the software. They are everywhere, go to Ebay.

neither.  it's just that new roads won't be listed on the maps.

thier TOPO maps aren't even that good.  Delorme has the best TOPO maps, but are incompatable with Garmins GPS units.

FTR, garmins GPS units are the best, just not the maps.

There are unlocked maps all over the torrent sites, from what my unscrupulous underworld contacts tell me.

When I bought my little Garmin about a year ago I was excited to learn there were updates and extras to DL. I plugged in a USB cable and signed up on the Garmin site, and was promptly informed that my unit was eligible for a free map update. I DL'ed the map, a bunch of custom cursors (vehicles) and was good to go.

If you havent registered on the Garmin site it may be worth your time... some of their models come with a free update.

Considering that the maps contain all detail for the entire CONUS, it really isn't a bad deal.

Sometimes you can get a free update if you bought your unit just before a map update came out or if you bought a unit that came with an old version. It never hurts to call them and ask.

Don't count on it. My new unit (November 2008) doesn't show several roads that are at least 3 years old. Garmin offered me a free map update for Europe.

Not true. Buying a new unit does not insure that you'll get the latest maps. I bought one last year and immediately checked for the new map. I found out one had been out for several months prior to my purchase. Garmin still wanted $70 to get the latested map. I returned the GPS.
