The S&W's are still made by Walther aren't they? I thought that they were just imported by S&W.

No, they are made by S&W and are the least desirable.  They look like hammered shit compared to the Interarms ones.  Interarms made very fine PPKs, TPHs, and PPK/Ss and also imported German PPK/Ss among other German Walther models.  PPKs cannot be imported per the 68 GCA, which spurred the S model ones.  They are a PPK slide and barrel on a PP frame.  The French Manurhins IIRC were imported as C&Rs and could be had for dirt cheap and as such were a great value.

I find it difficult to believe that Smith and Wesson is manufacturing a firearms that "look like hammered shit".

I'm just curious. The only reason I want it is because I want a James Bond gun. That said, I am not willing to fork over very much cash at all for one. A few hundred, but I don't want to get carried away for a gun that really will be just a toy.

James Bond has been carrying a Walther PPK for 45 years.

I disagree on the S&W hammered shit deal...they look pretty well put together. The beavertail kind of takes away from the overall look of the gun, though.

I thought 007 was toting a P99 these days?

An Interarms one will run you $400 or so, they always cost just about as much used as they did new.  Not sure about the Manurhins, but I doubt they bring more than $300 and are really nicely made.  I'd steer clear of the S&Ws, but they probably go for over $300.  PPKs, with the exception of the S&Ws, are simply not cheaply made guns, people buy them because they are so nicely made with perfectly fit parts.  That is why they are expensive.

I haven't seen a James Bond movie since Pierce Brosnon. I think the last one I saw was the one where the guy from the Magnavox commercials tried to start a war between China and Britain because he wanted to rule the world by making and reporting the news. The one with Terri Hatcher.

The S&W produced ones don't look like Bond's gun. They made modifications to deal with some of the ergonomic issues with the PPK....which detracts from the classic looks of the pistol considerably, in my opinion. They are more shootable, however. The S&W PPK's are pretty expensive...in the 600 dollar range, IIRC.

True PPK's fell victim to the 1968 GCA's point system. The PPK/S was the answer...a Walther PP's frame with the PPK slide and barrel IIRC.

Any PPK or PPK/S is probably going to cost more than you want to pay. Something that might be more in your price range is one of the ex German police Walther PP's. They are a bit larger and heavier than the true PPK, but they still have all the classic Walther lines. They can be had for around $300-350. They are generally in very good condition.

I remember several on the EE in the last several months for $350.  I don't know if they were Smith or Walther or whatever.

Real German Walthers are going to go for about $700 and up.

My SW PPK does not look like it was hammered from shit, and it's a great shooter. If I take a moment to line up the tiny little sights it is amazingly accurate. This pistol has been nothing but reliable for me.

The biggest change in the SW model is an extended beavertail, to help with slide bite.

I paid $325 used, with the pictured grips, about 18 months ago.

About $485 locally last time I checked for a NIB SW made PPK.  I opted instead for the Bersa Thunder which is a clone of the PPK.  I paid about $280 I believe for the Bersa NIB.

I said they look like hammered shit compared to an Interarms one.  Compare them side by side for fit and finish and the S&W comes out way down in quality.  My new Model 60 looks like hammered shit compared to an 80s production one as well.  Not sure if it is still going on, but at first a lot of the S&W "PPKs" were being returned for warranty fixes.

Steve, are wanting one just to own or to shoot?  I had an Interams stainless PPK/S and it was a dog.  Mine only ran on hardball and if you have large man sized hands, beware!  That little bastard bites!  The design really needs a beavertail safety as it chewed the hell out of web of my hand every time I shot it.

Both of my Interarms ones ran fine on all ammo except the CCI aluminum cased stuff.
