My next build will be an M4gery lower and I kinda like the dissipator upper.  I'm not sold on it, though, and might use an M4gery upper with a 16" barrel.  What does the hive think of the future value of the dissipator compared to the short handguard?

My shooter is a 20" HBAR.

I have a dissy inthe build process right now.   I like it and I am using the rifle length pri carbonfiber handguard.  basically sort of intended to look like a SLR15 grail.   I like the look like that.  I don't get as excited about it with the regular A2 style handguards.

Neither...go with a mid-length.

They're uglier than dog piss on a hot grill, but I want one.

ETA- and damn, the 20" HBAR certainly is H, innit?

Dissy is just a carbine gas length with a rifle sight picture, correct?

How about a middy dissy

If you are wanting iron sights, go for it!

Better sight picture, but front heavy. I still like mine (with a bipod)

Once I saw a picture of a Bushmaster Dissipator, I was hooked.
My original 'want' was an Eagle Arms M4(gery), but the Dissipator just had 'the look'.

Dissipator Models

Bushmaster XM15 E2S A2 16in Dissipator Model Bushmaster Dissipator Barrel showing 2nd shaved gas block and full-length M16A2 handguardThe Bushmaster Dissipator is an attempt at a "best of both worlds" AR carbine, combining the long sight radius of the full-length M16A2 with the shorter (16.1"/406mm) barrel of some of the shorter carbines. This combination would allow the most effective use of the iron sights for a carbine with such a short barrel, and may be preferred if the carbine is going to be used primarily with iron sights. Similar modifications have been accomplished in the past by other manufacturers and by depot-level modification, but these earlier conversions sometimes suffered from reliability problems due to the close proximity of the gas port to the muzzle, which throws the timing of the weapon's gas system off and makes it especially sensitive to gas port diameter and port pressure variables introduced by the ammunition. Bushmaster's solution was to use the front sight tower/gas block in its regular, long sight radius position as for the M16, and then fit a second, "shaved" gas block at the normal position for the carbine-length barrels such as the M4 or CAR-15. This second gas block is completely covered by the standard full-length M16A2 handguards, which may be used without further modification. However, some aftermarket rail systems may require minor modifications in order to be properly fitted. Dissipator barrels are available in heavy, fluted, and "M4" configurations, depending on the weight and balance characteristics required by the user.

I had a Howa .223 with a 12 power scope on it.  I was rather impressed because it made five shot, 3/4" groups at 100 yards.  Then I got a Bushmaster with a 20" barrel and it did the same thing with open sights.  I sold the Howa.

I love the Dissipator style myself.

You get the short 16" barrel, but with the full length M16 sight length.

My first AR15 (if i ever get one in this political climate...) will be a Dissipator style self build

They look nice with a full A2 stock.  Will a CAR stock they look goofy to me.  I'd like one that's not an HBAR w/an A3 upper.

I've got CMMG's version of a Dissy with the rifle length gas system. Though I've not had any issues with it, if I had to do it over again I'd go with the Mid-length gas system. Still, whatever you pick, I'd recommend CMMG.

dissipator if you are going to put a rail on it or if you are planning on one of those fugly 16" M4 uppers (not 14.5 with perm FH)

M4 if you are going to get a 14.5" bbl with 1/7 twist

great shooter.

I have been considering this lately.  I really like those Noveske 18" barrels and am thinking about throwing one of those w/ rifle length rail and FSB on my current upper (gotta get rid of that Oly barrel that's been on my parts gun since I got it, even though the thing is a tack driver, I want a 1 in 7 with threads)
