I've got a .doc file I just downloaded. I THINK it's supposed to be a pdf (it's a story someone wrote),  but Adobe isn't able to read it. Trying to open it in wordpad just gives me gibberish.

What do I need to read it?

Microsoft Word most likely.  You can download Open Office from openoffice.org for free and do the same thing.

ETA:  Damn I'm slow tonight.

How have you gone through life without ever using a .doc file at some point?

Beats me. I only started using .rar files two years ago.

I'll see about downloading Open Office.

Open Office, fuck MS Office.

Seriously why would anyone need to keep buying new versions of essentially the same word processor, and in the latest version they sell they changed the interface so people who have used it before have trouble finding shit now.

note pad.

Notepad will open .txt files.

MS Word & OpenOffice.org Writer will also do it.

Because I get the new version for $20 through the home use program.

$20 too much IMO especially since the latest version has a fucked up user interface.

I used to use Office XP, but what incentive is there to "upgrade" its not like word processing has come a long way in the past 8 years.

Wordpad should open it.

Programs > Accessories > Wordpad.

No kidding.....I guess Swindle never had to write a paper in his entire grade/middle/high school or college career.

Is this some subtle form of Information Technology-based trolling?

How do I open a .doc file? How do I open a .rar file? What next, how do I watch an .avi?

I'd catch on to it about the time he started asking about html files.

Wrote plenty of papers. An average of ten a semester, often more.

Of course, I wrote those on my desktop PC and not my laptop, which until I just downloaded Open Office had no word processor except wordpad and notepad. Those only displayed gibberish. Now I can read the story.
