Why is the 00 in 00 buckshot pronounced "double-aught"?

Is "double-oh" an acceptable pronunciation?

No.  Don't even ask about 30-06 either.

Aught is the only proper way.

Precisely.

Where'd it come from?

That's strange. I've always heard it pronounced as "Double-O Buck" or just "Buckshot."

Naught is olde English for 0 or nothing.  As in dreadnaught for a battleship, fear nothing.  Aught is a contraction of zero.

[#9]
They use that word in cable and wiring sizing too

Oh comes after the letter "N" and before the letter "P".
Aught is the turn of the last century term for "zero".

First came the 30 aught 3, 30 caliber round nose, in 19 aught 3 of course.
Then came the 30 aught 6, 30 caliber spitzer shape introduced in 19 aught 6.
For the 19 aught 6 Springfield naturally.

Dude, is your head like 2x normal size? I mean, you have like 50 trillion obscure facts, and at least twice that in normally useful knowledge..surely that can't fit in a normal size human head????

[Chorus]
30 ought, buck shot,
12 gauge, is sure shot,
American guns, American guns
30 ought, buck shot,
12 gauge, is sure shot,
American guns, American guns

[Tim]
Well, drop more than two million tons,
Ho Chi Minh's trail was sprayed with bombs,
Jungles of Laos, knew all along,
That the American war had finally come,
America, Land of the free,
They're all minions of democracy,
Debauchery, Luxury,
Bacchanalia's alright to me
Chorus]

[Rob]
Nah, I wont listen because I've only been lied to,
I got a few common enemies and still I despise you,
It's a, Cold mission, they pull up beside you,
In your own territory, it's leaves something inside you,
A wise man once told me, people are strange,
I'm a stranger in a strange land, strange as the days
Yeah I'm nice with the grouping, I'll stay at the range,
38 to the 40 cal A to the K

Smart? meh,  I would have just said, "Aught = zero". That's just me though. However, it was a very informative post and I appreciate it.

Isn't 30-06 so-named because it was adopted in 1906, also known as "aught-six" ('06).

Yup, naught is the correct word but us southerners have managed to remove at least one letter.

This. And aside from ammunition, it is still "current" lingo for sizing measurements, particularly of wiring. I.E., 1/0 Gauge (one aught gauge).

My grandfather used to say 'aught' when he helped me with math homework
30some years ago. Around here it's second nature to say 'aught-6' or 'double
-aught buck'. Also I kind of remember an old musical( The Music Man?) where
the main character claimed to have graduated in aught something or other.

Calling it double-oh is like calling an AR mag a clip.

If you say double-oh buckshot to somebody you will be ridiculed mercilessly.

Question for you smart people:  Hook sizes have 1/0, 2/0, etc.  Is it also pronounced the same way ie. one aught?

In my neck of the woods it is.

As silly as that is, I'd get what I needed.

Sure beats saying, "I need some shells."

"What kind?"

"Doesn't matter, they're all the same."
