I'm looking for a Warn winch, at least 8K, but preferably 9.5k...It's for a 99 Jeep TJ. It's fat, I've got lots of armor, skids and 33x12.5 MT's...so it's a bit heavy. Anyone know where to pick one up on the cheap?
I've also looked at the Mile marker winches, but they seem to get shitty reviews, so I'm avoiding those. Any other brand that you guys know of that are comparable to Warn? |

In the wrecker world hydraulic ramseys seem to be king. At least we never have any trouble at all with them. Their electrics may be worth taking a look at. MM has some great hydraulic winches too, but I hear the electric ones suck ass...I'll look up the Ramsey ones though. Thanks. |
What's on my 90" Land Rover Series II - Older Rebuilt Warn 8274. Fast, plenty of pull (heavy draw tho), durable, easy to rebuild, wont heat up synthetic line 255/85R16 KMs - probably not as heavy as your Jeep eventho its caged, sewer piped axles, full skids, some heavy front and rear bumpers (including Carrierzilla there) and steering armor. Aluminum panels, no sound proofing, carpet, etc offsets. They go stock about 2750 soft-top - mine tips at @ 31-3200 w/o gear. Should be fine, if not get a block. You'll have plenty of line - 150' All you need to know about mounting a 8274 on a Jeep
Looks good on anything Luck Alac |
| I sell Milemarker Ramsey and Warn and most clones. 15 years experince in selling them and getting repair parts. Go with WARN. Mile marker are goods parts are so so same with Ramsey. If you are only seldom gona use it any would be ok with any of the above. but If your gona abuse it go with WARN. 8274 is a great tough winch and Warn will always have parts for them. |

Winches are like insurance or tools. If you are going to depend on one, better make it a good one.
Go with Warn. I have two on my ranger and they both get a regular workout. I bought my 2nd one from www.gowarn.com. They had everyone else beat hands down on price. |

I'd stick with Warn. It's what I bought for my Jeep even though it costs a lot more. I figured that I could end up in the middle of nowhere when I need it, and be hiking for miles if it fails. http://media.ar15.com/media/viewFile.html?i=1906 Sweet Jeep! What are those rubber things on the hood for? |

What are the other guys in your club using? What do you plan on doing with it? I bought a Mile Marker but use it for self-rescue rather than rock crawling up slopes. If I'm out with my club - which is normal - I use a 2.5" diameter tug rope. Much faster. All the guys I run with have Warns. |

It just looks naked without a winch. http://i484.photobucket.com/albums/rr201/scubamc/jeepshow015.jpg They do look nekkid without a winch. Nice Jeep btw. |

I've got a warn 8000 on my 07 4 door rubi that works great. Had it on my old Tj & Yj too. I would recomend going with a Warn if you can afford it. Never have had an issue.
If you don't wanna spend that much cash, Tabor is a cheaper version made by Warn. Haven't heard good or bad things about 'em though. |

<<< Used to work at Warn
Quick recommendation. Sorry if I jump around. Its a bit late for me. Forget hydraulics unless you are going to run a separate PTO system. The Mile Markers run off power steering fluid, are painfully slow and basically junk. As for the Warn, I could run anything I wanted for zero dollars and I ran a regular, 8k winch with a standard (non-integrated) solenoid pack, 80' of wire rope and a hawse fairlead. This is the winch I recommend to people. 4wheel parts is also have a 20% off sale this weekend. This is THE band for the buck winch. This is on a small-block powered CJ with 35" rubber. Here's why: - the 8k winch has a high gear-ratio for quick line speed - its iight - the solenoids are easy to service if one goes - 80' of wire rope is light. In the pacific northwest we have trees every 10 feet. - A Jeep is a light vehicle. I have never gotten stuck and needed more winch. - The roller fairleads are junk. The rollers don't spin when the wire rope is against them. The hawse does a better job with less weight. There you go... -Z |

Same ratio here - more Rovers but only 4-5 that wheel irregular - so its mostly Jeeps and Tacos. I just need to leave 30 minutes ahead of the rest to make the trail time. Luck Alac |

I use electric winches every day for work loading cars. Some roll, some are dragged, some have no wheels at all. I ran Ramsey Patriot 9k's for a long time. They were fast, pulled good, but cost a grand each. Stumbled on a wrecker supply compnay in Texas called Pierce Sales and tried one of their house brand 9k winches because the price was half of a new Ramsey. When it arrived the MADE IN CHINA stamp was a bit disappointing, but I was very impressed with the winch once I put it n service. It has the same mounting pattern as a Ramsey, good line speed, comes with hard wire control, roller fairlead, and block. Just checked the site, na dthey are on sale for $400. One year warranty.
Pierce 9K winch I have a few of these and will continue to buy them as needed in the future. No need for me to buy a "name". ETA...I did have one winch that shorted a post to the case and burnt. Called Pierce Sales in Texas, talked to the technician Chris, in Texas, and he diagnosed and sent a new motor to replace the old at no charge. Not only did he send the new motor, but he sent the whole end assembly as he said "it's a pain to swap the motor when the whole end can be swapped in a few minutes." I have had good customer service with Ramsey as well, but you just can beat this price. |

I have had good customer service with Ramsey as well, but you just can beat this price. MN: What's your average pull time on a recovery or load? What kind of duty cycle? Pierce used to be a Ramsey distributor - they won a large verdict based on Ramseys price fixing, therefore got into distributing "their own". Pierces are slow (worm gear ETA the one noted above is planetary - I stand corrected - couldnt find any line speed or draw info tho) but are generally reasonably well regarded. All the winch companies have China stamped on at least some of their winches - Warns M8000 are now sourced from China (Sorry OZ). I do wish Pierce wouldnt just cut an paste bad Chinese marketing copy Features super torque strength (each stage of speed reduction is composed of 3 pieces of gears, and each piece of gear is produced by a high pressure process with a high precision character and high working capacity).
It's hard to find unbiased winch reports - none of the offroad mags want to piss off advertisers. In those that supposedly are - Warn is at or near the top. FWIW I have less than $400 in my 8274. If you are at all connected with your local 4x4 community there will be winches to be had. Some may require some attn (depending on the model might be a deal breaker, might not - 8274 not an issue) - but they dont ship well, wheelers tend to be capricious and often in spots needing money. Have cash ready and make the deal. If you want to blow a grand on a brand new 8274-50 - its worth it if you require self recovery often. But you've got plenty of options. BTW - Do yourself a favor - if you see much winching in your future, 2 good deep cycle (not starting) batteries, and please learn how to use them safely. Luck Alac |

Red: Nice Looking Series Trucks - like the front cage into the sliders, always a pain there, never seen it done that way. The real question is - have all 5 been running at the same time? Cant keep oil in em - cant keep water out.
Oh - the YJ. It's merely there for 'educational' purposes (and not mine). I only have Land Rovers - sometimes a blessing, often a curse. But I'm a masochist Luck Alac yes all of our land rovers run, my family owns 5 and we keep them all up to snuff, btw i might be wrong on this but if you have a stock SII it would be refered to as an 88' and not a 90' |
