Let's say you have a job and you get short term disability insurance through work. Say the insurance is set to kick in 6 weeks after you have been out of work. You pay into the program for a few years and then you get hurt or sick. You are out of work for four weeks and your company lets you go. You have two weeks before your insurance is supposed to kick in.
Do you lose the insurance benefit with your job and become ineligible for short term disability payments through the program, or are you still covered and enrolled even if you get fired for being out of work? |

If I hire you to lift boxes and you are hurt OTJ and can no longer lift boxes, I can fire you since you can't do the job I hired to you for. |

I don't really know but....I would think the STD is from a different company and since you got hurt on the job you would be eligible for STD. I would say to read your STD contract to be sure.
Now if you got fired then hurt yourself I think that may be different. |

Some of it will depend on if the insurance is employer or employee paid. Most supplemental insurance that is employer paid can be continued after separation from the company if you continue to pay the premiums. The same is also true if it is offered through the company but you pay the premiums.
If it is an on the job injury then workers comp will pay. |

I don't know. I do know that, at least in my case, applying for SSDI due to an injury that renders you unable to work, you are fucked. Particularly if you're a 30 year old white male. Even though I've had 3 surgeries so far, and a fourth on the horizon, the fact that I cannot stand for more than 15 minutes or sit in a regular chair for more than a half hour without excruciating pain means nothing.
