Saw a post here a few weeks ago asking about it.  I saw some at the BX the other day, so I picked it up.

Here's my impression:

It's different.  Red Bull doesn't sell it as an energy drink, but they do list "caffeine from coffee beans" as an ingredient both in the ingredient list, and separately on the can itself.  The taste is not like most traditional "colas".  It's nowhere near as sweet.  Since it's made with sugar and not corn syrup, I was expecting a much sweeter beverage, but it is not so.  The taste is almost more like carbonated tea than a traditional cola.  The color is also much lighter.  To describe the flavor, it's like a less sweet Coca-Cola, with a hint of... something.  My first sip tasted very citrusy, led by lime, but with a bit of orange in there as well.  Further sips became more different... it's hard to describe–– almost like if you mixed 50/50 Coca-Cola, Lipton Brisk Tea, and added a splash of gin.

Overall, it's not bad, but for the price ($1.20/can or so) I don't think I'll be buying more.  It's certainly no replacement for Mexican Coke in terms of a cane sugar sweetened cola, and I don't think it will seriously catch on to the point where it will be available in fountains any time soon.

$1.20 ???

Shit, thats a deal. Once they slap the obesity tax on there, it'll be like $5.00

I'll have to try it.

I ended up chugging 2 Monster Assaults before my final this morning for breakfast.

Regular Red Bull is alright.

I noticed you said a splash of gin.  I thought the same thing when I tasted it....that it seemed to have a hint of alcohol in it.  I dunno why..

regular Red Bull got me through pilot training.  I'd buy the 16oz cans by the case.  For the longest time the commissary had them mis-labeled in their system (at least I think so)... the 16oz cans rang up for the same price as the 8oz

Read the ingredients list on the can...that will explain the unique flavor.  I've found that people either love it or hate it at first; but it grows on you after a while.  For $1+/can, it's not worth it though, IMO.

ingredients:

   * Water
   * Sugar
   * Carbon dioxide
   * Natural Caramel Flavor
   * Natural flavors from plant extracts: galangal, vanilla, mustard seed, lime, kola nut, cacao, licorice, cinnamon, lemon, ginger, coca leaf (absent in some countries[3]), orange, corn mint, pine, cardamom, mace, clove
   * Caffeine from coffee beans and natural lemon juice concentrate.
