First, since the guy pointed his weapon at the cops he got what he deserved. Just kinda wonder if the police just didn't shoot the dog for good measure? Florida Police Fatally Shoot Man, Dog Friday, December 12, 2008 MIAMI –– Miami-Dade Police have fatally shot a suspect and his dog after the suspect pointed a gun at the officer. Detective Roy Rutland says police were searching a wooded area Thursday, days after a man pointed a rifle at an occupied school bus and then fled. When detectives searched the same area Thursday they were attacked by a large dog. Officers fatally shot the dog and were then approached by a man who pointed a rifle at them. Authorities fatally shot the man, who has not been identified. No further details were given. Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All rights reserved. | What's with all this crap about cops shooting dogs? There are many dangerous dogs in the world and they get shot on a regular basis. The law, as it stands, regards dogs as property and requires a lesser justification to use deadly physical force against one. Why is it such a big deal around here? Are the police rounding up and executing harmless poodles or something that I am unaware of? |

Hell, I shot at a dog this morning for knocking my trash cans over and getting in the garbage. |

Police kill man they say had gun
BY YUDY PINEIRO AND DAVID OVALLE [email protected] Miami-Dade detectives shot and killed a rifle-wielding homeless man and his German shepherd after they surprised police by jumping out of the brush in Naranja, officials said Thursday. The man lived in a heavily wooded area behind the community center at Naranja Park, 14150 SW 264th St. He slept under a blue tarp, next to his pots and pans. Three detectives from the South District –– until recently called the Cutler Ridge station –– drove to the park Thursday afternoon. They were investigating a report of a man who had pointed a rifle at a school bus several days ago, then ran into the same wooded area. While they were scouring the woods, the dog burst out of the brush toward police. The man popped out, too. ''The suspect armed himself. He raised his weapon and police fired,'' said Miami-Dade Detective Roy Rutland, a spokesman. The man and the dog were mortally wounded. No officers were injured. ''The officers were in fear for their lives and their safety when the subject pointed a rifle at them,'' said Brendan Coyle, an attorney with the Police Benevolent Association. The names of the dead man and the detectives were not released. Miami-Dade homicide detectives investigated in a driving rain. The South District was also the scene of a double murder Thursday. Two men were found shot to death just before noon in Perrine at a house at 10621 SW 170th Ter. Their names were not released. http://www.miamiherald.com/news/southflorida/story/809577.html |

"When detectives searched the same area Thursday they were attacked by a large dog"
I suppose you would prefer that they allow the dog to chew on them like kibble? As a former uniformed LEO I will be the first to admit that, JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER OCCUPATION, there are douchebags in the ranks. However, NOT every story about a police officer shooting a person or a dog is unjustified. I know everyone gets their kicks out of bad mouthing cops (right to free speech and all) but it never ceases to amaze me that the great majority of the people that do the bad mouthing would get absolutely pissed off (and rightfully so) if people were posting the isolated military incidents where some douchebag did something stupid and then proceeded to lump all military men/women into the same category. I would like to ask the OP what profession he is in? I'm sure it must be one in which every person in that occupation has never done anything wrong (clergy maybe - oh thats right, they like to molest kids - Doctor maybe - oh thats right, they like to molest patients and commit insurance fraud - college student - oh thats right, they like to give unsuspecting women date rape drugs at the bar - IT specialist - oh thats right - they look at kiddie porn on the computer and hack into peoples personal information). I still believe in the age old adage about walking a mile in someone's shoes prior to making any judgments about their actions or character. |

Man points rifle at school bus, cops investigate, news at 11.
Darwin says "A couple days later would not be the day to be hunting or taking a rifle into those woods." It is simple Darwin math. Cops + man with a rifle + attack dog = Darwin award. Sad, but true. |
