Why no rush on AK mags? I've been buying AK mags at a pretty good clip. However, there aren't any AK rifles on the market, or now, for the price for a good AK, you can get a damn good AR, and most people will choose the AR now that there is no price advantage. |

At least from visiting my local dealer, there seems to be more demand for ARs than AKs. He can't keep any ARs or AR mags in stock, yet has a wall full of AKs and other Eastern Bloc rifles. Prices don't seem to be a problem as they are reasonable if a little cheap for MD. He also has a ton of 7.62x39 and 54r.
Maybe its something unique to the local demographic or maybe people are afraid of an import ban hampering their usefulness down the road. I don't know what to make of it, but everything seems out of wack lately. ETA - I'm not really an AK guy, could it have something to do with the availability of 20 round AK mags to comply with MD law? |

Your basic American is shrewd. Facing the prospect of being without, he has chosen the AR over the commie gun. You can't argue with the market. But they aren't arfcomers, 'cause we get both. I was going to pick one up earlier this spring but I just didn't want to pick up another platform and dilute my $ going to what I have. I don't have enough time to shoot what I have, but some day I'd like to tinker with the AK. |

Considering the number of countries that have produced AKs and AK mags, and then the number of countries that have produced AR rifles and AR mags....um, yeah, you have a point.
2. AK mags are pretty durable and were designed to be. AR mags OTOH, were designed to be disposable. |

There's a reason why steel surplus AK mags were only about $12 during the 1994-2004 ban––-there are metric shit-tons of them available, and they don't ever seem to break. Additionally, almost none of them are dated, and they don't bear manufacturers stamps. There's really not much in the way of "pre-ban" demand when 99% of the mags are indistinguishable from real pre-1994 mags.

There's really not much in the way of "pre-ban" demand when 99% of the mags are indistinguishable from real pre-1994 mags. Eventually they will dry up. Right now, nobody is bothering to produce them. But they are producing AK's- so eventually they demand will outstrip supply. Look at how FAL mags have changed in the last 15 years. They were once $3 each, now good luck fining them under $12. Once price gets up around $25, somebody will tool up and make them again. Same goes for G3 magazines- right now they are so cheap it is crazy- I am going down and literally buying another pickup+trailer load full tomorrow to sell, and I sell them for under $2.50. Right now when it comes to G3 mags these are what we will later call "the good ol days"- buy them now, they are not making any more. AR mags, on the other hand, there is no big supply of used ones, and new ones are still in production, so prices are not going to fluctuate much aside from a few folks who think they can ride this buying spree. So I expect AR mags to stay steady, but AK mags and all the other surplus mags I expect to go nowhere but up- the days of the massive surplus mag dumps by various countries is over for a while, and on some like AK and FAL the best days have passed us, on others like the G3 the best days are now- but they will all be going up as time passes, while AR mags stay around the same. |
