Having had a few encounters with moose, I can say that they are, without a doubt, some of the dumbest fucking creatures known to man....Yes I would have defecated in my hunting clothes as well...Being that close to a cow with young is not a position I would want to be in.

I've been ALMOST that close to a wild moose with calf once.

1983, backpacking in the Wind River Range outside Pinedale, WY. My greenhorn buddy, amatuer photographer, was DANGER close to them and thought they were MULE DEER

I didn't want to YELL at him to get the fuck away from her because I thought I might spook her into charging him. So I walked over close (I had a tree to my back) and was whisper/yelling at him to get the fuck away from them.

After they wandered off and he had his pics, I calmly explained to him that those photos WERE NOT worth getting stomped to death.

While backpacking, moose ALWAYS have the right of way, and they can have as much room as they want. I got too close to a mom and little one once.......ONCE!

The first moose I ever met chased my brother and I.  I've seen quite a few from various distances in WA, ID, and AK.  I steer pretty clear of the bastards.

I got chased by a cow moose in the Bridger /Teton wildernes area back in 1992. she had hid her calf in some willows, then circled around to check us out. We saw her calf's butt sticking out of the brush; my buddy said, "is that an elk calf", to which I replied, "wrong color, an elk would be tan instead of rust".
At this point, Mom stuck her head out of the willows, and when she saw us, her ears just laid down behind her head. My buddy said, "what do you think we should do", and I advised running.
She escorted us for about 200 yards, then doubled back for her calf.

Good Times...

Even though that was a small cow moose, being anyway near a cow with her calf is just plain stupid.

Darwin was asleep that day.

Been there, done that.

Momma and two calves in my yard no less than 5 feet away from me, and giving me the hairy eyeball.

I SLOWLY backed out to my porch and made haste inside of the house.

Is it just me or is that a mannequin? Look really close at the thumb and the head. Looks fake to me.

Of course that doesn't account for the moving camera, unless the camera man was back further in a blind and zoomed in a bit.

Thats how I hunt deer with my longbows and recurves. Off the ground and up close and personal. Its a rush having animals up that close eye to eye. I have had deer closer than his moose was and had large bucks charge my ass. I can usually care less if I kill something or not. Its having encounters like that. That makes it worthwhile.

What the story behind those pictures?

We found a young moose stuck and exhausted one day when we were out duck hunting. It was so tired it hardly even struugled and I doubt it would've made it through the night.

Unfortunately, we had to shoot the mother since she wouldn't let us get close enough to help the baby out.

Just kidding.
