Took my CHL renewal Saturday and the place was standing room only.  We then met Sunday at a local range to get pic'd and printed, and there was another class, absolutely packed again.

The range parking lot was completely full both days, had to park down the block.

Amazing, everybody in Texas will be carryng

How many years are the permits good for and is the class every year or just at renewal?

No, how it should be is being allowed to exercise your constitutionally protected rights without a permission slip from the nanny state.

At least GA is 'shall issue' and no class taught by some tard doling out his uninformed wisdom is required.

Texas is 'shall issue' as well.  I think you don't understand what 'shall issue' means.  It doesn't mean that you get it just by asking for it.  It means that if you meet the requirements set forth by your state, they have to issue you a permit.  Conditions could be taking a class, showing proficiency, having residency, passing a background check and other qualifications.

I believe he meant it was good to see folks excercising their rights no matter what the (unconstituional) restrictions.

I'm hearing rumors that TN CCW classes are packed, too.

My dad is just now getting around to applying for his.

He went to qualify at the range a few weeks ago - said it was the saddest thing he'd ever seen. Bad ammo, guns that didn't run, people who brought the wrong ammo, wives who were sent to the range with single-action revolvers they couldn't load......he went with a brand-new value pack of .22's and even had a couple of misfires himself. He had to loan ammo to other shooters.

In other news, he scored a perfect score on his qualifying target.

I get to take mine this weekend again.

Can't wait. I like talking to the newer people in the sport.

I have had my CHL since the first year Texas  allowed them (1996).  I have taken the class and several renewal classes.  I don't mind the classes because I have learned something new at every class. Some of the people wanting a CHL don't even know which end of the gun to hold, so the training classes are a good thing, in my opinion.
The instructors I have experienced were not a bunch of zero's giving out bad information.  They have been highly trained, very courteous and professional in their job.  I see nothing wrong with that.

New lyrics to the John Lennon tune:

"Imagine all the people,
Taking CHL class..."

Sounds pretty, eh?

ETA:  My CHL intructor said, "My goal is to get more guns on the street."....My kinda guy.
