Just curious, has this always been a problem?  I never heard about it until 5-10 years ago.  Now everybody needs "help" sleeping?

Is  there any  study that shows the fitness level/weight of those who suffer that?

My dad had problems 40 years ago with it.It's just better understood now. Yes, weight is a large part of the problem.

Yes, there is tons of info out there. The more unfit and over weight you are, the more likely you are to suffer from it.

Unless it's neurological.

See half way down page one of my thread.

Weight causes it in some instances, but the person doesnt have to be overweight to have apnea.

I work in healthcare, among other things my facility has is a sleep center.
More and more people have been coming in for studies...far more than in past years.
They are predominantly heavy people.

I know a guy who has had it since he was a kid and has never been overwieght at all.
In some cases, fitness / weight arent an indicator.

Still, it seems that as obesity becomes more predominant, the sleep apnea cases have increased.

My dad said he first complained about it in the 70's when they had no idea what it was. They gave him sleeping pill since they thought he wasn't sleeping deep enough. At the time he weighed 170lbs.

I have trouble breathing through my nose and the nurse seemed to hin that it was nuerological in my case. I have been pretty fit for a while now and been having trouble sleeping anyways. Just recently, the extreme fatigue and constant need to sleep has caused me to gain some weight. I'm not extremely overweight; about 5'10" and 225lbs. I have been into heavy weight training for some years now and even at a low body fat, still weigh about 200lbs.

My question is; if overweight people are more prone to have sleep apnea, is the apnea because of the weight, or is the weight because of the apnea?

In my case, the apnea came first.

You raise a good point here.  Apnea and weight are merely correlated.  We cannot say that one causes the other because of the reverse causation problem you bring up.  Furthermore, there could be some other problem that actually causes both.  Perhaps some hormone is responsible for people gaining weight and acquiring sleep apnea.  Nevertheless, there is a strong correlation between apnea and weight.  Research I reviewed on the topic indicates that excess weight in the neck actually collapses the throat causing the problems associated with apnea.  Thus, most people suffering from apnea would seem to benefit from losing weight.  Clearly, as you point out, losing weight will not "cure" everybody, though.

Or due to physical structure.
