Take a look at a Remington 1100, its on the cheaper side and a bit of better quality then its mossberg counterparts

Saiga 12. If you can find one.

if not, the 1100 works great as long as the gas port is fairly clean. The 11/87 works just fine. I'd rather have a Saiga.

Wander around a pawn shop or two and buy an old Winchester 1400. They can be had for about $150.

TriStar makes some decent ones for cheap.

Saiga 12 used to be cheap, now it is more money, but worth it.

I'd go with the Saiga if I didn't have an M4 already.

I picked up a Charles Daly autoloader for $275 for an upcoming waterfowl that I wanted a synthetic stock for. So far so good.

2nd on the Saiga.

There were lots a few at the DFW Fun Show for $649.

most will work most of the time.

the Saiga will work the best of the cheap brands.

when you get into other brands you have to decide what your going to use it for.

tactical shorter barrel shotguns are a bit more finicky with ammo, the longer barrel hunting shotguns are more forgiving.

don't try to cut down a long barrel hunting shotgun and not expect problems.

a gun smith can do it for you, but there goes your "cheaper" alternative.

A decent out of the box "tactical" shotgun is the 11/87 police model. (if you can't find a Saiga.)

Whew, I picked mine up for $380 with a 10 round mag included about a year ago. I would still pay that though for one. It is so much fun to shoot.

I have a variety of self-loaders that work well

Franchi 12 and 20 gauge

Stevens 745- alum receiver browning design "fastest shooting SOB" in my collection

Rem 1100- probably the best all around semi-auto I have

None of the above broke the bank

Don't guess you would be interested in a nice Winchester Super X huh

it is a bit better than the Charles Daly ( I will never own anything CD again)

Find a used Remington Model 11. Nice used ones can be found for $200-300. All machined and forged steel. A great value IMO, and they work. They are basically an exact copy of the Browning Auto-5.

is the saiga cycling cheap 7 /12 value pack loads from walmart for you guys?  Mine will only run on hotter stuff but maybe it needs to be broken in

What is your gas tube position, 1 or 2? Mine cycles everything, even crappy bird shot.

Saiga 12 FTW.  My Saiga 12 eats everything.  My 1100 sees so much as a speck of dust, it locks up.

Remington/Spartan SPR453. 3 1/2 Magnum capability, works with everything I've tried right down to 100 pack target loads, 5 choke tubes and below $400. A friend of mine who has the Charles Daly hates it-I could probably get it from him for $100 if I wanted it. His only works with magnum shotshells(Federal Hi-Power and below will not cycle the action). My only complaint on the SPR453 is that just like any other Russian made gun it's not much to look at, but for the price on an automatic that works I can't complain. It has an adjustable gas system like the Saigas to cycle the light stuff.

not very hard to find couple year old beretta 390's for around $400.  They're great guns. Local shop has one NIB for $500.

Used Remington 1100/11-87, or NIB Mossberg 930.

Do not listen to the Saiga fan boys. I have not seen a NIB non-converted Saiga for less than $500-$600, and then you have to figure in conversions costs.

Remington 1100 for a no nonsense shotgun.
Yes, Saigas are cool. However, I'd still take an 1100 any day of the week.

mossberg 930 or 935, always works, and made in the USA.  i'd say the rem 1100 except the gas system sucks.  you can put dirt in the mossbergs and it loads every time.

This.

I have the 930 Special purpose combo .... has both a 28 and an 18 inch barrel.  Doesnt have the frills of the ghost ring or the tall front sight but it still works and is effective.

It is a Browning Auto-5...Remington made them during WWII while Browning was making weapons of war.  I have my grandfather's 20 ga Model 11 and it is a great gun.

That being said, suck it up and get a Benelli M1 or M2.

Not sure what your budget is, but do not buy a Charles Daly autoloader. My buddy bought one from Walmart, and that thing is the biggest pos ever.  I don't have a lot of experience with semis, but I do know that you get what you pay for with semi shotguns.  Look for something used, browning gold, benelli, whatever, just not a Daly.

Sure is, best "working gun" I've used. My only complaint is the extended choke tubes in an already 28 inch barrel. Makes it tough to get a case at times.

It think Stoegar is owned by Beretta.  I own the pump version ( P250 ) and I love it. I shoot the hard-kicking 3 1/2" shells. The only problem I have with it is that I can't find any after market add ons for it

Mossberg has never made an auto loader shotgun that I considered functional.  Their pumps are good but stay away from the Mossy autoloaders.  I have had two and both were junk!
I have a Remington 1187 and a Winchester 1400 that have both functioned flawlessly.

I have a Rem 1100 I picked up used for under $300 about eight months ago.  It has been very reliable, even shooting light target loads out of the 18" open choke slug barrel it came with.

I have since poured a little more than the purchase price into it in the form of a synthetic stock w/ pistol grip, +3 mag tube (total capacity 7+1), High-vis mag follower, and an EasyLoader (the best aftermaket accessory you can get for an 1100).  Next on the list is a set of ghost rings and it will be complete!

Nearly every single online dealer is listing them for $599, and that is IF they even have them in stock. Plus you have to figure in conversion parts, magazines, and the actual conversion work unless you have a WECSOG degree.

The OP wanted an inexpensive auto shotgun, and the Saiga is not cheap. A converted Saiga is right up there with used Benelli M1s & M2s price-wise.
