I filled out my background form to pick up my new AR today and my application was denied.  This has happened before when I have bought other guns, and they usually call the next day, apologize and i get my gun.  The guys at my dealer said I can apply for some universal pin number or something but I can't find it on the ATF website.  Anyone know what they are talking about?  I live in Tennessee, if that matters.

Its a number that when used makes misidenifications impossible.  Call 1.877.324.6427

I called but did not find an option that wasn't for an actual background check.  What is the name of the ID number?

You will need to get a UPIN # assigned to you by NICS.  You will need your dealer to provide you with the NTN Number of your transaction.  If it was today it probably starts with 19__-___ .  Once you have that you can appeal the NICS decision but it can not be done over the telephone and is only handled via US Mail.
Once you have your UPIN (unique personal identification number) you will need to enter that in the last box of your personal information before you start answering the yes/no questions.

Just curious, did you put your SSN# on the 4473?

No, I didn't put my SSN on there, I am so used to not writing it on anything that I skipped over it out of habit.  In hindsight, I trust the ATF, FBI and my FFL, so I should have written it.  I am told that is typically the reason for denials.

How can I apply for a UPIN number?

I understand the right to personal privacy and the mis-use of a SSN but if you think the .gov is going to allow you to purchase a firearm without knowing exactly who you are then you are kidding yourself.  If you trust your dealer and the .gov it's usually best to provide your SSN.

To get a UPIN you must initiate the appeal process.  You will need the NTN # from your dealer to start the appeal which is handled via mail.  They should be able to provide you with address to mail your letter.  It's a bit of paperwork but should turn out well as long as they (NICS) made a mistake.

So if for whatever reason I am denied, how long do I have to wait?  They told me up to a week, but it has been a week.  Can I just re-apply at some point?  There is nothing in my background that will throw up any flags.  I am applying for the UPIN with the NICS, they were quite helpful.  It just sucks that I spent the money and now I have to wait and wait.  My FFL hasn't been super helpful either.

tag is a way of marking a thread by a lazy person who is shamelessly trying to increase their post count, instead of just clicking the "subscribe" button in the thread, or the green cross button when viewing the entire subforum

it is particularly pathetic for team members to do it

I was initially denied in the past, not sure if it has to do with my different security clearances I have had or what, but every single time it goes through the next day until now.
