Well, not me but a friend of mine found a very lightly used Persian rug on Craigslist and offered the guy $900 for it. Her and a friend then took it to get it repaired (one of the tassles was ripped up) and the guy at the rug shop offered her $6,000 on the spot...
...The guy said it's some one of a kind and would wholesale for $9,000 and retail for around $26,000. Fuckin A. I thought $100/1000 of Wolf was a good deal. Still some hidden treasures out there. I plan on spending a lot of time this summer at garage/estate sales. |

Why would he tell you that the rug is worth $26,000 and only offer you $6,000? Is he stupid? He told them after they were for sure not going to sell it... She is actually keeping it, because her husband makes about .5mil a year. Big shot corporate lawyer. She's going to decorate one of their spare rooms around it. |

MSRP and "worth" are not the same thing, especially for luxury items. The difficulty in selling such things is attenuated somewhat by online resources like EBay, but finding the people who are in the market for something like a$26,000 rug can be tough, and they usually aren't going to be interested in something that's had 2 previous owners. I learned this lesson about 20 years ago on a really fine inlaid table with the intention of turning it for a quick buck. A roommate and I went in on it together for around $1000, knowing the piece was "worth" well over $15K, as it had been purchased only a couple months prior. It took us over a year to sell it, and even though we got nearly $3 grand for it, we had money tied up in longer than we wanted, and it took way more effort than we we're hoping for. The guy we sold it to had a shop that sold such stuff, and a regular clientele who bought such stuff, and he sold it in less than 3 weeks for more than double what he gave us. |
