place their hand on the left rear tail-light when approaching the drivers side of a vehicle they've pulled over?
12/1/2008 5:00:12 PM EDT
[#1]
My guess would be it's a safety precaution to ensure that they aren't walking too far out into traffic without realizing it.  But again that's just a wag.

Its the trunk they are checking not the tail light.  They want to make sure no one is gonna jump out of it.

Why the hell would the trunk be open?

edit: damn, guess so.  I've never heard of a cop getting attacked by someone that was hiding in the trunk, though.  I'm sure it happens but it has got to be rare.

I know some that do it to make sure the trunk is latched.

Ambush. Unlikely, sure, but why chance it when you can check with near zero effort.

Ive got a button inside my car that opens the trunk

Not to mention most new cars have emergency latches on the INSIDE of the trunk

I'll take a wild stab and say that they do it to leave fingerprints on the suspect's vehicle should anything bad happen to the police officer.
12/1/2008 5:03:56 PM EDT
[#15]
It is also to put fingerprints on the vehicle for identification purposes.

Often enough that they trained at the acadamy level to check it. Moot point these days, since trunks can be opened from inside the vehicle or the trunk. Not a common feature before the 80's.

Thing is, the police never know who they are pulling over.  It could be the get away car from a bank robbery in which the guy hopped into the trunk.  Its an easy quick feel with no slow down though they know there is a trunk release in the car.  If the driver would hit the trunk release the officer would either see them doing it or hear it.

It may sound odd, but a traffic stop is never "routine".

12/1/2008 5:05:37 PM EDT
[#20]
A guy at the P.D I worked for was walking up on a Cadillac during a traffic stop and the douchebag popped the trunk - out came a Pitbull. Douchebag was on his way to a dog fight and kept his Pitbull in the trunk to make more angry. Didn't do it much go though once his head was turned into a canoe by a hydrashok.

OMG - yep, a Police officer shot another dog. Lets call PETA.

We were taught to check the trunk. In the 1960's it was apparently somthing that occured often enough to stay in the training books. I was hired in 1985 and they still wanted us to check the trunk.

The DC snipers had a pretty elaborate set up in the trunk of a car.  It is rare but happened enough to start the practice and after about a thousand times it sorta becomes second nature.

they are suppose to tug on the trunk to make sure someone is not going to attack from behind after they pas the rear of the car and start interviewing the driver.... sounds like what you had seen was a guy too lazy to reach the extra distance to keep himself safe

I have heard that it is basically to build a murder case if you are to get shot and killed at the scene.  The finger prints on the car ties that individual to the crime.

Right, my bad.  Then the police have to tie that individual to the car.

I can't tell you the number of times I've had illegals/criminals come jumping out of a trunk at the border and running.  It's real fun when they pile out of a 53' trailer.

It would have been extra funny if you had closed the trunk after the k9 jumped in.

If those are the reasons, it is as stupid as the TSA selecting someone for extra screening for paying in cash or buying a one-way ticket.

If it is such common knowledge then any dumbass's lawyer could just say, "was the cop's handprint on my client's car?", after the guity party wiped it off.

AND does it mean every person that got pulled over in the last few days is now a suspect?

The fingerprint is one part of the case; not the sole piece of evidence.

And no; not every car recently stopped is a suspect......just the last one the officer stopped before being killed.

Bad guy in the trunk.

To put a finger print of themselves on the light or trunk for forensic evidence if God forbid it's needed.

They couldnt care less what you do once you drive off from the stop. Getting out of the vehicle during the stop isnt the wisest move to make.

The sprinkles will remain on the car so you know where you need to clean.

Not going into every detail but I do other things also on traffic stops. I usually just check the trunk lid not for fingerprints just to make sure it's closed. I wear gloves when conducting traffic stops.

is it legal for police to touch your private property? There sno officer safety involved here. Guy in trunk is too much of a stretch.

I wouldn't like small scratches in my points from a cop putting his hands on my paint covere din dust or dirt.
