Was looking in the garage for something today and found this on the shelf.

1994 Chev k1500, 350, NV4500, 3.73. 170,000 miles when it broke.  Barely audible, took the ring gear back to a friends shop who tried to diagnose the noise and said "You couldn't hear this?"  He was dumbfounded he couldn't hear that!

I took it in for a noise when decelarating and throttle slightly open, The diagnostic tech couldn't hear it.  After I found/fixed the problem, I took the ring gear in and dropped it on the counter just when he came in from a work bay, he just stared at it and mumbled something about not believing he couldn't hear it.  (My friend no longer works there because her paychecks kept bouncing, went out of business a short time later)

The teeth were still in the bottom of the diff, I could have just welded them back on!

since the part is no longer in the vehicle, it is not bad.

What is bad... is your HEARING!!! HELLOOOOO!!!!

That part is still fine.  Just get a dremel and work the other teeth down so they're all the same height.

Gm 10 bolt with a gov lock. Replace diff with an Auburn or Eaton.

Wouldn't that require an automatic?

I just think this drivetrain combo can put out much more torque than a 10 bolt was ever designed to handle.

6.34:1 first, then 2:1 transfer case.  12.68:1 overall from engine into diff.

I had a 1976 GMC K20 with a Dana 44 up front way worse than that and is still ran no problem.  I discovered the chunks when I changed the lube.  Pulled them out, refilled, and it ran for many years until I sold it.
