For many years the accepted (required) and PC word for people of color has been African-American.  I believe the term was embraced by them to show 'pride' in their roots, background, history, etc. The American press has been especially attentive in this use.

I was wondering why now I see in all the newspapers that we now have our first 'black' American President. Why not our first African-American President? Why the sudden change of heart?

You know why. Racism doesn't exist unless you are white and talking back against a person who is non white.
