I was talking to a CMP employee about ordering a rifle. I asked this employee about what they felt would be the future of the CMP and if there were any new rifles/handguns on the horizon that the CMP would be offering. This employee told me that they have a employee meeting every week and in that meeting it is stressed by management that the future of the CMP is bleak due to the existing stock of firearms drying up and the uncertainty of future available firearms. Employees are encouraged by management to seek other employment opportunities outside of the CMP because the future of the CMP is uncertain.

It's a damn shame. The CMP is a great program, I wish we had something similar.

Lobby your Congressman to give M16/M4 etc. parts kits to the CMP, have them fit semi-auto receivers and sell them to the public.

I wouldn't worry too much.  If McCain wins, I think they will be fine.  If Obama wins, like that fuck is going to have the first clue what the CMP is or even exists.

I love the CMP, but with their line of work; the better they do their job, the more quickly it is over for everyone.  They have a finite amount of available resources and they will be exhausted at one point.

I know, I secretly hope that USGI M-14s will be available, but I know they won't.

The real issue is what weapons are they gonna sell? There are only so many M1 Carbines, 03's,  1911's, and Garands left in the world. They can't convert and sell semi-auto M14's/M16's. The last era of US firearms they can legally sell ended with the Garand and M1 Carbine. They could sell M9's if the military let some of those go to the CMP, but that is unlikely since they are still being used.

Orest Michaels said that their charter specifically prohibits the sale of pistols. The 1911s were given to foreign countries or cut up for scrap. CMP never had any in their inventory.

Once a machine gun, always a machine gun.

What's CMP going to sell to the public once the Garands and such are all sold?

I wasn't aware of that. The DCM sold pistols. I guess some politician cut a deal to keep the CMP in business, but only if it was selling rifles.

Isn't the M16A1 still used by some rear echelon units of the NG and Military, or for training? There are probably no obsolete M16s.

They'll run out of M1 Garands, M1 Carbines, and M1903's eventually.  I wish they could sell us surplus M14's, M3A1's, and M1 Thompsons, though.

If they were smart, they'd sell surplus ammo in a bigger way.  They could import other military calibers as they do sponsor a foreign milsurp match at Camp Perry.  .303, 7.62x54r etc.

I've often thought that they should try to get special permission from the BATF to cut the full-auto lug off of M14 rifles and sell them as semi-autos. Mechanically, it would be identical to an M1A.

when i was there a few years ago they told me there were bunch in storage theat they could not sell and they would be "wood chipping" there were a few that were being kept for competition guns for the national matches but the rest would be destroyed eventually.

I wouldn't count on that. 300 brand new Union Switch and Signal 1911's were found in a warehouse not long ago and set to Iraq or Afghanistan, can't remember which.

Mostly cut up by Executive Order.  I remember the piles of M14 stocks and parts that were at gunshows for a year or so.

BATFE will never cut a deal on the remaining M14's.  'Once a full auto ALWAYS a full auto.'

I see your point, but I doubt there is enough quantity of unfound WWII era weapons hidden in warehouses to keep the CMP in business.

Probably because they'll have to pay for them. They probably can't operate and pay the overhead unless they get the majority of guns/ammo for free from the US Government. If they actually have to pay the going rate for surplus firearms and ammo, they become just another AIM Surplus etc with AIM Surplus pricing.

Does the US military have any kind of semi-auto/bolt action training rifles? Where did those brand new .22LR Kimbers come from?

I really need them to stay in business so the m82a1's can make it down the line.
