As far as I know they are legal with the plates(check your local laws though).  Just be sure of the history of the vest and that you aren't buying stolen government property.

You should be good to go.

some are legal, even if they do have the plates. The only way they would not be legal is if they are stolen from the military. Sadly, most (but definitely not all) interceptors in civilian hands are stolen government property.

you can have plates too, so long as it's legal in your area to own, and they don't belong to the military.

On a side note.

Don't pay too much for an Interceptor.  They are actually getting to be obsolete and there is better armor out there.

Just make sure you aren't paying as much for an Interceptor as you would spend on a newer vest.

That sounds pretty good.  Is $500 a fair price for these with plates?

Also research the production run, a few were not up to standards.  (google the serial number)

In 2005 they swapped all of our interceptor vests because they were made during a bad production run, and failed ballistics tests miserably.  This was the vest I wore in OIF 1-2.

There are good vests and bad vest out there.  Most will be stolen as well.

It's not worth it.  I bought a new Interceptor off of Ebay that the dude said he bought from Quartermasters.

Had "US Property" on it and the dude gave me a song and dance.

I returned it ASAP.

It ain't worth the hassle or charges.

When we were first issued these vests, the paperwork was not in order.  It was two days before we boarded a plane when supply pulled up with a truck and handed everyone a vest.  Because of this lack of paperwork, anyone that was issued a green vest, and got out of the Army before they were re-issued a DCU or ACU vest had no paperwork requiring them to turn in a green vest.

Many guys simply took them when they got out.  That is why there are a ton of green (defective) vests floating around.

IIRC the bad run was around 2001-2002. mine fell into that date range but the serial numbers checked out ok.

it's a good vest but ungodly bulky and i can't image having to "run and gun" wearing that thing.

is it 'stolen' if they never asked me to turn it in?

ive kept it around just in case they ever finally do ask

How many were not made for the DOD?

A non stolen diverted one would be a rare find

At best you will find grey market ones in my opinion I don't claim to be an expert but I don't think the Interceptor has ever been officaly sold to anyone except the dod

Now it never happened with a vest to me, but when I was enlisted Army I had a couple times I was issued stuff, then when I went to turn it in it wasn't on the hand reciept.  The supply guys said there was no paperwork on it, they didn't want it, so keep it.  That actually happened with an EOTech 552 that I ended up passing off to a guy rotating in who wasn't issued an optic.
