1. The nose of a beagle will over ride it's brain every time. That means ALL of your trash and smelly stuff will have to be picked up and put away. 2. They are high energy dogs. That means if you sit on your butt when you get home from work, you got the wrong dog. 3. Beagles are great hunting dogs for rabbit 4. They love attention, to play, go on car rides, and walk. 5. They whine lots. That means when they are upset or you aren't giving them attention, they will whimper or whine. When they are excited, they will howl like a hound of course. Love our Beagle. |

Had one as a kid. They howl...a lot. Did I mention, they howl...a lot. But, usually when something "needs" howling at. They are protective of their territory and howl at anyone coming near the yard. They are ruled by their noses, so you need a good fence unless you want to be chasing it around the neighborhood all the time. Ours got out all the time to chase a scent. But, she always came back home when she was good and ready. Very playful and very high energy. Very loving, sweet and I think a really great dog if you have the time to play with her and have room for her to run around. You don't want to get one unless you already have a fence. It would be pretty difficult to try and have a beagle without an enclosed area for them to run. |

My beagle is very fearful and skittish but friendly and lovable with family. She doesn't really bark much but I have a doggie door so my doggies hang out in the house most of the time. It seems that most beagles like to bark and howl a lot. And you can never let them run free off a leash. I also have a beagle dachound mix that LOVES people, esp children. I had to extend my fence with hardware cloth to keep her from climbing out. I don't think she can do that anymore as she is a little bigger and a little lazier. Here are my girls Both of them looking at a squirrel ![]() My little beagle ![]() The beagle dachound mix ![]() I R Sereus |
I love mine. They have tamed down quite a bit with age. My first was wonderful as a puppy, but the second was a handful.![]() I also saw the coolest thing on they way back from our cruise last week. In customs in Puerto Rico they were using a beagle as a drug sniffing dog. I wish I would have taken photo, but I don't think they would have like that. |

Loud, playful, and smart. They do dig and tear up trash, too. They also travel if given the chance, being prone to following their nose. However, they are good around little kids. All the ones I've ever had have known how to act around them, and although they are energetic and playful, they don't nip much after they get some size to them. I've got a sooner who thinks its the funniest thing in the world to grab my arm and try to drag me |
I wonder how many people here know what a sooner is! (I do!) |

Lived with three Beagles. They really are great dogs. And, like others have said, if the beagle is a little older, so much the better. Just keep them bathed as they can smell a little houndish. As an aside: Heard one beagle howling (baying, whatever) after a squirrel while out hunting. My redneck buddy says in passing "That dog has a long voice.". Took me a while to figure that one out. |
