I was at an estate auction over the weekend and in one of the $1 boxes of stuff I bought there where some large unfired shell casings.   They have a 30mm opening are 173mm long have written on the side base 30MM 28108674 MMT-2-12-74.  On the base it is stamped HM.  Now if I am reading the marks I am assuming that the MMT number is the manufacturing date of Feb 12 1974.   I know the specs for a GAU 8 is the same as this one but I believe the A10 came out a few years after this.   Is there anything else that would use this casing? Could it be a pre production run for the GAU 8?

I am betting that it was never offered as a shoulder fired platform.

Wow, I saw some early/Pre-production GAU-8 ammo made around 1976-1977 that had purple cases. This is different. Cool.

Probably is for the GAU-8.  It is definitely NOT meant for the M230 30mm "chain-gun" used on the Apache.

hehehe.

The gun substantially slows the A-10 down when firing.

Any way to get specs to make or purchase a realistic "dummy" projectile to fit on the case?   Any way to know what the proper projectile for this case would be?

Stout but manageable,   That line gave me a pretty good laugh,   I bet the following line would be after walking back the 30 feet that the rifle threw me...

That would bounce right off; it has to be 40mm from a grenade launcher. Even two A-10s could not stop Scorponok, so they had to call in an AC-130 to drop 105mm and 40mm Bofors on it to put a dent on his ass.
