I thought it was a term for a racing technique where you corner with a fair amount of side-slip, using the throttle as a significant control input. But has it become a sport in and of itself? A side-show feature? Wiki 'Tag ' to read the article when I get back. |

+1. That's retarded. I've always thought of it like this... Well... he couldn't win, but he sure looked good sliding around those turns, let's give him a special medal! |

Nothing like bouncing your engine off the rev-limiter continuously.

...and nothing like bouncing your head off the front axle continuously.

The worst part is that what they're doing is not even drifting, it's power sliding. Drifting is when you go around a corner and all the wheels keep spinning the same speed, but the vehicle still slides sideways compared to where the wheels are pointed, and during the drift you do not use the gas or the brakes. With motorcycles, a (racing) motorcycle enters a turn going basically too fast, and scrubs off some speed while sliding outwards in the first half of the turn. The proof of this is that there will be two separate light "skid marks" left from both tires, even though the brakes were not used at all. For a car, there will be FOUR skid marks, as all four wheels have to be sliding sideways. It's hard to find good videos of motorcycle drifting online because the internet is full of 20-something boys with riceburners who think that they're cool for doing a power slide, and then calling it "drifting". The truth is that 99.99% of them are too afraid to go fast enough around a turn to actually try doing the real thing. Drifting at low speeds on pavement basically isn't possible; you have to enter a fairly sharp turn very fast to even attempt it at all. The best video of (motorcycle) I ever found was here, but it has been removed for TOS and I haven't been able to find it anywhere else, and I don't know what event it was taken from. http://video.aol.com/video-detail/valentino-rossi-drift/4240766573 There's lots of other videos showing Rossi drifting, but not as good as this one was. :( ~ |
That's a keeper. |
That video made me laugh. |
