I was out this evening, my wife received a phone call from "National Insurnace" (or something like that) with a caller ID of "Union Benefits" He told her it was for a life insurance policy that "your husband signed up for", gave a name, a confirmation number and said that he "had the card that I signed asking for it." He said something about that (my wife takes shitty fucking messages) "you have to sign to be the benficiary" or something to that affect, and he made an appointment for 8:30 tomorrow night to come by the house. What the hell is this? I didn't sign up for anything (I don't think). Sometimes I get free insurance from the bank (like $1K) for just having an account and I take those since they are free. But I wouldn't have signed up for any supplimental life insurance through the NRA. I certainly don't remember doing so. What the hell is this? Someone scamming me? |

Once you have the name of the company please post an after action report. I do not see how a name as common as National is turned into NRA and then posted as a scam. I beleive at this point that much was lost in the message. Are you actually an NRA member? Or do you belong to a union? Let us know, sounds like an interesting meeting with your salesman. |

I agree, my wife's message sucks. I am a member of a NYC union and she said she only answered because she thought it had something to do with my union. But when he said "NRA" she asked him "NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION?" And he said "YES." I do belong to the NRA. But he said he has to come here to sign a beneficiary form. Why can't he just mail it? So I called (11:30 at night now) the number on the caller ID (he didn't leave the number). The answering machine identifies them as "National Income." Very fucking fishy to me. |

Sounds like a fisherman to me. Does NY have a website you can look up the name of the 'agent' to see if he is licensed and with whom? Also, contact the NRA and let them know the particulars, with the election the way it is I would not be surprised if it was just a piss off the NRA members ploy. Interview this clown and as you have already stated don't buy anything, just be sure to keep the stuff as you need to think about it until Friday. Make copies and send to the HQ of the NRA. Good luck |
Yeah, "JOE." Narrows it down, doesn't it. He didn't leave a phone number either, I had to get it off the caller ID. Thinking about it, there is NO WAY that this isn't a scam. IT IS A SCAM all right. Now, I just have to figure out how I'm going to deal with it. |
A beneficiary doesn't have to sign anything to be desiginated as one, ever. In addition, every state has a state board and website that will allow you to look up the agent's name. I'd suggest you get this guy's last name and do so. |

I just spoke with one of our contacts at the NRA and they told me that the NRA is NOT doing any telemarketing. It seems this is a scam, or at least some misrepresentation, if they are representing themselves to be calling from the NRA. Good luck with it and keep us posted. |

Ok, I just spoke to them. Evidently it is somehow attached to the NYSR&P association in some way. My wife got the message wrong (as I thought). I guess there is some free life insurance that goes along with the membership in the NYSRPA and he is trying to sell me more on top of that. It's not so much a scam as a high pressure sale I guess. |
