Bama looks great this year. Good for you (My 2nd favorite team)

However:
"ESPN has selected the South Carolina - LSU game for its 8 p.m.ET kick on Saturday, October 18, the Southeastern Conference has announced."

I know The Gamecocks ain't all that but they have been known to surprise some big teams. It should be good.

SEC doesn't have the best teams, they just have the toughest conference because it is the most competative conference. Where as conferences like the PAC-10 may have 1 or 2 GOOD teams, the SEC is MOSTLY made up of GOOD teams, but that doesn't mean for that reason they have the BEST teams. USC would beat ANY team in the SEC.

I wish USC would quit losing to an unranked team every year so some SEC team can FINALLY play them in the national championship instead of some overrated Big 10 team.

It is the competitiveness of the SEC that prepares us well for bowl games and national championship games. It's just like playing any other team in our conference.

From what I understand, during Bear Bryant's tenure as coach, the front line was so strong and immovable that they were called "The Elephants". It has since just become a regular part of the Tide's logo, a throwback to recall the Bear's days as coach.

I believe the Roll Tide came about before the Elephants. Something about what a commentator said regarding them wearing their Crimson Jersey's running down the field during a kickoff. Hence Crimson Tide.

There are several references to the elephants, all of them pre-date coach bryant . . . the two most famous ones relate to: a long trip the team took during which they were given luggage from a local merchant whose logo was a crimson elephant; and the most famous is from a newspaper reporter.  During a game in which bama was stomping the hell out of someone during the first half (using the JV only), the Varsity took the field in the second half and the reporter exclaimed "look out boys here come the elephants" (or something similar).

The Crimson Tide reference also comes from a newspaper reporter who used it to describe the Bama Line during a particularly wet football game.  He wrote that the Bama front looked like a Crimson Tide.

I have forgotten the dates of these, but I am 95% certain that they all pre-date Coach Bryant's return to Tuscaloosa in the late 50s.

ETA: As for the OP, LSU fans are the worst fans in football, I have witnessed it first hand multiple times. . . worse than Tennesse (by a little) far worse than Florida, Michigan, Notre Dame, Auburn, Ole Miss, M$U, aTm, etc

I know, I was just providing a proven example of how your post was maybe wrong.  SEC gets the short end of the stick because of pollsters desires to put shitty teams in the top 10 (Notre Dame for instance).  Once an SEC team finally had an opportunity they walked in and absolutely annihilated the supposed favorite.  To say USC would beat any team in the SEC is a stretch.  They MAY beat any team.

I actually like many of the SEC teams. I like to watch Florida, LSU and Alabama.  Though I couldn't root for neither LSU or Florida since they were playing against each other, it was fun to watch. I will say the SEC is the most exciting conference to watch play.

This came from the website RollTide.com about how the elephant came to be:

 The Elephant Story

The story of how Alabama became associated with the "elephant" goes back to the 1930 season when Coach Wallace Wade had assembled a great football team.

On October 8, 1930, sports writer Everett Strupper of the Atlanta Journal wrote a story of the Alabama-Mississippi game he had witnessed in Tuscaloosa four days earlier. Strupper wrote, "That Alabama team of 1930 is a typical Wade machine, powerful, big, tough, fast, aggressive, well-schooled in fundamentals, and the best blocking team for this early in the season that I have ever seen. When those big brutes hit you I mean you go down and stay down, often for an additional two minutes.

"Coach Wade started his second team that was plenty big and they went right to their knitting scoring a touchdown in the first quarter against one of the best fighting small lines that I have seen. For Ole Miss was truly battling the big boys for every inch of ground.

"At the end of the quarter, the earth started to tremble, there was a distant rumble that continued to grow. Some excited fan in the stands bellowed, 'Hold your horses, the elephants are coming,' and out stamped this Alabama varsity.

"It was the first time that I had seen it and the size of the entire eleven nearly knocked me cold, men that I had seen play last year looking like they had nearly doubled in size."

Strupper and other writers continued to refer to the Alabama linemen as "Red Elephants," the color referring to the crimson jerseys.

The 1930 team posted an overall 10-0 record. It shut out eight opponents and allowed only 13 points all season while scoring 217. The "Red Elephants" rolled over Washington State 24-0 in the Rose Bowl and were declared National Champions

And the Crimson Tide name origin:

How the Crimson Tide Got its Name

1900 Offensive formationIn early newspaper accounts of Alabama football, the team was simply listed as the "varsity" or the "Crimson White" after the school colors.

The first nickname to become popular and used by headline writers was the "Thin Red Line." The nickname was used until 1906.

The name "Crimson Tide" is supposed to have first been used by Hugh Roberts, former sports editor of the Birmingham Age-Herald. He used "Crimson Tide" in describing an Alabama-Auburn game played in Birmingham in 1907, the last football contest between the two schools until 1948 when the series was resumed. The game was played in a sea of mud and Auburn was a heavy favorite to win.

But, evidently, the "Thin Red Line" played a great game in the red mud and held Auburn to a 6-6 tie, thus gaining the name "Crimson Tide." Zipp Newman, former sports editor of the Birmingham News, probably popularized the name more than any other writer.

I want LSU and USC to finally play each other. I do not like USC, Ohio State, Oklahoma, or Michigan.

I can't stand the media love affair with those teams.

When LSU won the national championship in 2003 USC pitched a fit they didn't get to play. Yes, they were undefeated and did deserve to play, but that's not how the system worked. So, they ended up sharing the National Championship with LSU.

Then undefeated Auburn got left out in 2004 they didn't get to share the championship with USC. Oh, and Oklahoma got killed by USC. All I could think was Oklahoma was way overrated and Auburn should have been given the shot. So I guess payback for 2003.

The media love affair continues with USC in 2005. Thank god Texas beat them. That's one reason why I'm not against Texas.

In 2006 Ohio State was supposed to be this unstoppable team. Well Florida, showed what an SEC team can do against an overrated Big 10 team.

In 2007 a 2 loss LSU team beat an again overrated Ohio State, and their fans still try to say they're better than any SEC team.

This BCS/voting system is the only thing I hate about college football.  Who gives a damn what a bunch of reporters think.  It has been shown that they collude and put whoever they want into the BCS title game.

Don't get me wrong, I am a bama fan, and I don't care where we are ranked today . . .Just in January; but to be fair, we trounced 2 top 10 teams, both on the road; texas got into a shoot out with OU in Dallas.  They are no doubt a great team, maybe better than bama; but my point is why should this conversation have to take place.

We should not already have to worry about who is going to get screwed this year.  We should be able to enjoy the games and know in the end that if your team lost it was their own damn fault (like the NFL and every other college sport).
