what are some fun reactive targets for kids to shoot at?

my gun club has a "plinking" range, so I can use wussy style stuff like clay birds

If you're shooting .22s, golf balls can be entertaining. They're very dense, but the bullet will easily penetrate. As a result, they tend to fly pretty well when hit.

ETA: They'd be good for multiple hits as well. A .22 through a golf ball leaves an entrance that looks a little bigger than a pin hole, and an exit only slightly larger.

Watermelons are awesome to blow up.  Balloons are fun and cheap, and clay pigeons are actually fun to shoot at at longer ranges

Check out my youtube vid, of what a .50cal does to a watermelon

Get some cheap soda at Walmart.  Shake 'em up, then shoot them.

Shaving cream or whipped crean cans are fun. When you hit them they spray every where.

Save some tin cans or old gallon paint cans. Fill one with water and stack another one the same diameter or a little larger on top. Shoot the bottom one and the top can will fly up in the air. Makes a good reactive target.

Buy a bag of balloons

Fruit and cheap coke like Sam's Choice is always fun to shoot.

Add some flour or other powder to a balloon and then inflate the balloon.  It makes a cloud when hit  If you have helium in the balloon, with the balloon tied down so the wind will move them some it makes for a more interisting target.  Gongs are always fun and you dont have to reset the target any.   Granted a gong that takes a 22 fine will get chewed up when the centerfire folks think it would be fun to shoot too.

I always enjoy water filled milk jugs and high power rifles.

I you are a good shot - pin a paintball to your target.  You can also use colored thumb tacks to put up your target - gives you a fun way to take your target down.

If you shoot with someone else, you can have target races - start at 20 yards, and see who can knock the target out to 100 yards the quickest.

Apples and potatoes work pretty well. They are reactive and will splatter real nice even if hit with a .22. Cheap bulk lollipops are also good targets.

All are biodegradable and wildlife generally appreciates the extra calories.

If you want to put on a show, coconuts and a .44 magnum makes the point about how dangerous guns are in a "Woa!! That was cool!!" sort of way.

+1 on the old coffee mugs.  They go "poof" when struck with rifle rounds.

Colorful balloons + helium + string + cheap radio controlled car = good times.

I also like the idea of putting flour or baby powder in the ballons for a little more visual effect.

yeah some buddies of mine wanted me to do that with my RC cars.  Unfortunately they aren't cheap and I don't necessarily trust those guys to not shoot them

I think it would be cool to line the back of a silhouette target with those fast food foil ketchup packets. A bullet passing through the packet would possibly give a splatter effect. The range I go to won't allow it so I haven't tried.

Those small cans of tomato sauce. You can still catch them on sale 10 for $1.00. Great visual when hit!

Propane tanks are sweet!
CD's were a bit of a disappointment, but were OK for trap shooting.
+1 million on shooting fruit like watermellons.
Old cars are a blast to wail on.
Shooting bricks and cinderblocks are fun and educational.
It sounds wierd, but trying to skip .22 rounds off an old car hood onto a target is pretty fun. They splatter a lot, but its still cool.
Skipping empty beer cans around a field is good times too.

omg, I would get into so much trouble if I did this.

tape some catchup packet to the front of a steel silhouette.  Repaint.  Watch the face of the shooter when the silhouette spatters blood.

R. Lee Ermy did a thing back in the day where he hung paint cans over a blank canvas and then shot them to make art.  Always wanted to try that, might be fun for the kiddos.

Small squares of sheet rock can be entertaining. Reacts even better if placed directly in front of a steel plate.

Also powdered paint in glass jars.
