Anyone know how old the youngest justice has been when they were appointed?
What is the average age for a Justice to retire at?
I am thinking that IF obama wins he will probably appoint someone fairly young and very liberal. If he puts someone in who is 40-50 and they stay untill they are 70-80 we could possibly be feeling his effects for the next 40 years.

SCOTUS don't retire, they tend to die in office these days. Whether it's ego or attention hungry or whatever, I can't recall the last justice I know that retired.

No clue as to the youngest, I'm sure in the older days there's been some in their 40's as people didn't live as long back then.

Well if obama becomes President I am guessing a few may retire simply to guarantee that they will be able to guarantee a liberal successor.

Yup.

As liberal as O'Conner was I suspect that is why she retired during the Bush Administration, because she had been appointed by Ronald Reagan (one of his few mistakes).

The Constitution does not have requirements for the Justices so the Pesident can nominate anyone.

I suspect he would seek someone with some judicial experience though.

You're right he could replace those liberal justices with some very young ones and since the average age of the Justices is 68 he could replace conservative justices if they die.

Joseph Story was 32 when James Madison put him on the bench in 1812.
