hi guys and gals
So I have a problem.....I want to stop dipping but it is so freaking hard to quit!
I've tried the gum and the grounded beef jerkey....but nothing gets it done.  Dipping is the only regret I have from joining to Army....It is terribly addicting and worse than cigarettes in my opinion...I used to smoke  long time ago, but i manged to cut that cold tukey, but dip is just a different game....anyone got any suggestions?

Stop doing it.  And no, I'm not being an ass.

The first step in overcoming any addiction is the realization that you are ultimately in control of your actions.  Not the dip, not your buddies, not the big tobacco companies.

You did it with cigarettes.  You can do it with dip.

I'm working on it myself, cold turkey since 8-15-08. It's so hard.
I always reach for it in my pocket and am constantly running my
tounge on the inside of my lip. Just stay strong I was chewing over
a can of Kodiak a day. My lip isn't as raw as it used to be even
though its only a little over a month. Good luck.

Zyban to lessen my assholiness (that force was strong in me)

Altoids to have something where my snuff would be

I did this as my own personal experiment with my old roommate. He wanted to stop drinking Coke. I made a nice plan for him to slowly stop drinking it and after a certain date in time, I'd punch him for ever sip he would take. Best 3 months of pure torment any person could possibly take. Yeah, he doesn't drink soda anymore.

I was dipping almost 2 cans a day before I quit last year.  I went cold turkey.  The first week was hell on earth.  Get some of this: www.quittobacco.com/quitchew.htm, it helps alot the first month.  I quit about a year ago.  For the first 6 months, I would crave a dip after a large meal.  Now I can't stand the smell of the stuff.  I can smell someone dipping from across the room.

Good luck.

Just Google mouth cancer/oral cancer and dip/chew/smokeless tobacco.

Then hit the Google images button.

There are some very nasty pictures of what could very well happen down the road if you don't quit...scare tactics usually don't work very well but it's worth a try.

Also, know that ultimately you are in control of your actions. You could quit cold turkey if you really set your mind to it. Maybe keep trying the nicotine gum to help you avoid some 'withdrawal' side effects.

You can do it. Just think of all the money you'll save to buy guns/ammo/mags with.

Me, too.  For any reloaders out there:  DO NOT reload while quiting tobacco!!!!

Seriously, do it during a time when you know you have a leisurely time to do it....limited stress, nothing requiring too much focus or attention.  Blast holes in a target at 25 yards with a shotgun, but don't try to shoot sub-moa groups with a rifle.  Nothing good will come of it.

not worse, because you only get to enjoy a cigar maybe once or twice a week.

I've witnessed 2 people go from 2 packs a day to 2 cigars a week.

it's better by far.  There's no evidence it causes mouth cancers, and some evidence that it can cause a moderate increase in pancreatic cancer, but since normal tobacco does that anyway there's no reason not to switch if you're gong to keep dipping at all.

Nope...don't work.  There's the chemical additiction to nicotine, and, my issues, the habit of having something between you "cheek and gums".

If you're going to quit:  COLD TURKEY IS THE ONLY WAY.  I've quit 3-4 times, with no dipping for years.  The only way to do it is to just stop.

Now, I need to read this back to myself again 200 times.

no.  You stopped dipping. You didnt quit.

Stopping is a state that implies that you are going to proceed in the future, like you are at a traffic light.  Quitting is forever.

But really, f-that. Smoke cigars instead!

Ive stopped of my own volition a few times for an extended period of time in the 10 years or so that I have dipped.

I will do it just to prove to myself that I can every once in awhile. You can do a number of things. Some that worked for me were:

-Finding an "activity" to replace dipping at times when I normally would be dipping. It can be any number of things.
-Im a thrifty guy so alot of times I will have to remind myself that $6 here and there is a decent meal instead of eating ramen or leftovers.
-Sometimes you just have to sit down and literally challenge yourself to not do it. I was never a tin a day kind of guy but still you have to draw a line in the perverbial sand and tell yourself that you can quit.

Good Luck. Its tough but I would say that if you broke yourself of smoking, you should be able to beat dip too.

Correct, but if he's not able to quit dipping, he can continue using traditional tobacco and suffer a several hundredfold increased risk of oral cancers as well as a doubled pancreatic cancer risk, or can switch to the snus and still have the same pancreatic cancer risk but almost completely eliminate the oral cancer risk.

I know some hardcore dippers who were totally unable to quit but have probably added decades to their healthy life to switching to snus.  The "all or nothing", "quit or die" approach to tobacco addiction doesn't always work for some people, so might as well give harm reduction a try.

That said, of course he should actually try to quit first.

The Navy was on an anti-tobacco kick a few years ago.  All over dental where pictures of nasty-ass oral cancers, especially on the ceiling.  Revolting.

Ex-smoker and dipper.  Do it the way I did.  Get REALLY hammered, two days worth.  Wake up in your rack, spend an hour or so telling your self you are not going to barf.  Roll over and stick your face into an ahstray with butts, beer and chew in it.  Spend the afternoon cleaning up projectile barf.

Smoking is fucking nasty, and chew is even worse.  Patch?

Good luck.  Try candy?  I keep Jolly Rancher cinnamon fire's by the gross, and it's been 15 years.

Simple. You know it is bad. You know the bad of it can result in a slow acting, miserable death. You ARE able to make choices. enact your will against this and any other thing that you do not want in your life and STOP doing. Period. Do not entertain humorous viewpoints, camaraderie or fancy plans in your "attempt" to quit. Do not "attempt to do quit, as "attempting" is allowing yourself the possibility of not realizing your goal. Just recognize that as "you" choose "you'll" do and stop doing it. The whole excuse thing builds failure, so if your bad habit is what you want with and extra order of drama, entertain excuses. If you do not want to do it anymore don't. After a few weeks your body will adjust. You should train your brain to look upon tobacco with disgust. Matbe you can use all the misery that has been unnecessarily born out of it's use. A mans will power should he choose to respect it is unbreakable.

Now, are you man enough to decide what you put into your body? Are you man enough to respect your body and life by not making excuses that endanger it? I'd say good luck, but luck is for raffles and such. Luck, has nothing to do with a decision to improve your life by quitting. Just do it. Exercise your will.
