[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Handcuff keys? (Page 1 of 3)

I opened a thread inquiring about a certain trigger lock: http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=118&t=396142 I really don't want to discuss the merits of said lock, but an issue came up, that I would like to ask separately. How many non-LEO's here have handcuff keys that they actually carry on a regular basis? |
I do. The main one is on my key-ring. It is a full size one made by Bianchi. I also carry a small one in my wallet. ETA: The only time it became an issue was when I went to pay my car registration at the local Courthouse. I was asked to leave the key in the lock-box at the entrance. |
|
I do, but just by happenstance. When I got a set of handcuffs, I put one of the keys on my keyring, just so that if I ever cuffed the Mrs. I am gauranteed to have a key. I'd hate to have to show up at the hospital with the wife handcuffed to a bed-post because I lost the keys. Thats not really why I bought them. I don't know why I did, just something neat to have I guess. Never know when you might need to handcuff a person that is turning into a zombie. I read that in Florida it is a FELONY to have a "concealed handcuff key".

Welcome to the Information Age. |
Right. Wouldn't want any of those "civilian" sheep to have forbidden knowledge would we? Innocent until proven guilty right?

Let me guess, Chicago? |
I agree with you about the picture. But that is why I carry hinged handcuffs. I'd like to see him do that with them. Also, I'd like to see him get those cuffs in that position while he is wearing them When it comes to citizens carrying cuff keys, I have to disagree with my fellow brother in blue. Citizens should and have a duty to protect themselves. We can't do it for them. If they were a victim of a home invasion, and cuffed, at least they have a chance at getting free and getting out of there. |

The photo is from the Ohio Bailiffs and Court Officers Association: www.ohiobailiffs.com/documents/disguised_weapons_index.pdf I assume that you will be sending them an email expressing your outrage? |
You might want to rethink your answer. You aren't the only one who cuffs people and information is king. If someone is ever cuffed by an attacker it would really help to have that knowledge. On the other hand maybe you don't approve of Evil black rifles in the hands of us serfs either By the way "apprecate" is spelled appreciate |

I'm an LPO so I carry handcuffs at work. I carry 2 keys for them. I have a motorcycle, so I have a quick release on my set of keys that releases my m/c key so I dont scratch up my triple tree/gas tank with keys moving around. I have one attached to my m/c key and one attached to the main set of keys in case I need one and dont have my full set of keys, as I always have my m/c key on me. ...If that makes sense. If i didnt carry handcuffs at work, I probably wouldnt carry a key. |
Thank you. |
I agree. It's the same as referring to armor-piercing rounds as "cop killers" despite the fact that body armor is available to anyone, including criminals. We shouldn't be able to defend ourselves from criminals in armor, and we shouldn't have a means of escape if handcuffed by a kidnapper.
|
Well, I used to be a security guard, and just never removed it from my set of keys. I still have a set of cuffs, so keeping the key convenient seems like a good idea to me. |
You didn't know you could buy a set of hand cuffs? http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=m38.l1313&_nkw=hand+cuffs&_sacat=See-All-Categories |
Wow. I'm glad that you are "skeptical of my character". Personally, I'm skeptical of yours. I carry a spare handcuff key on my keyring for the same reason that I have a spare safe key and a spare 4 wheeler key on them, even though I never use them. Because that is the only way I'll know where they are at if I ever need them. Although, after reading this thread, now I see that there are other good reasons for having one handy (home invasions, etc.). In fact, I might just put one on my wife's keyring. Are you going to be "skeptical of her character" too? I guess the fact that I bought a pair of handcuffs once at a gun show gives you reason to be "skeptical of my character" anyway though. ![]() You'd probably have a heart attack if you saw my gun safe. Anybody that doesn't NEED all those guns for professional purposes must be up to no good. ![]() |

I can see both sides to this issue. If I were a Police Officer, I would probably be skeptical too. On the other side of it, a key might come in handy if you are robbed, mugged, snatched...ect. No, I don't have any cuffs or keys. Hank Earl Carr |
The reason why when you get put in the back of my car you will either feel violated or need a smoke. |
I have one on my keychain, two more in my truck, and one on my tac vest. |

Folks, I really didn't start this thread to be a bash fest. Although,as I said before, law abiding citizens have the right if not obligation to have a cuff key handy, I also know where my fellow LEO is coming from. In a society that allows freedom, it also allows freedom to the bad guys. If you ever had a prisoner get out of a set of handcuffs (I have) you may be able to understand the pucker factor that we feel about handcuff keys. When searching a prisoner, they are one of the hardest items to find on a person. Hell, I got to the jail once after searching a prisoner only to find out that the bad guy had a cuff key in his mouth. It is a very dangerous world out there for all of us, both LEO and non LEO. But until and if Mike responds, cut him a little slack. We don't know what his LEO experiences have been and I am certain that he was concerned about the bad guys learning new tricks, not the law abiding citizens here. |
Citizen's arrests are legal in many places, including my State. If I ever have to shoot someone, and they are still breathing before the cops get there, I plan on making sure they are as little of a threat as possible, possibly including cuffing them. I do not look forward to that type of scenario, but it would be foolish not to be prepared as possible. |
Man, there is some really kick ass shit in that link!!! |
|
You know.. I never even thought of if from a criminal/legal aspect of it. I am not a LEO and have a handcuff key on my key chain. No idea why.. I found it in some surplus store and it looked cool so I put it on my ring.. Heck I don't even own a set of handcuffs. Perhaps I should take it off there? Never even thought about it. |

Holy shit!!! Motorcycle oil tank knife!!! |
Sad day on so many levels. |
That's true as well. I have some idea of where you are coming from. Sorry to everyone if my response was a little too "attitudinal". I still disagree with him but I understand what you guys have to face everyday. In my CCW course, two of the instructors were LEO (one of them Chief of Police). Just in that short time, some of the things they discussed that I had never even thought about before nearly raised the hair on the back of my neck. There are some evil people out there. We are all on the same side! But you still can't have my handcuff keys! Mike, please accept my apologies for giving you a hard time. |
That would be a pretty damn good idea. You'd probably almost be garaunteed to be treated with extreme prejuidice by any LEO that ever discovered that though. |
|
Why do you call me a troll? It has just never once occured to me that I may need a handcuff key. I guess if you are into that kind of thing in the bedroom, but other than that... I am not stirring the pot or anything like that, I am just asking a question. So you should check yourself with the "troll alert" and maybe just answer my simple question. |
