I know probobly not many if any of you even know or care who i am but i have been around awhile but try to stay out of most arguments and conversations that will get me in trouble. ANYHOW for those who don't know i am a deputy Sheriff who blew out a disc in my back in May of 2007, I have been in law Enforcement a total of 10 years. Now after this back injury and living the past year on Vicoden,Steroids,Lyrica, darvocet,Morphine, and many more drugs i can't remember, It seems the only option i have to rid myself of the pain is a spinal fusion of the L4/5 and L5/S1 disc, The Dr's say regardless of surgery or not i will never return to my prior job as a Deputy and that my only option is to get Voc Rehab and find a sedentary job.....The part that really sucks about this is i brought home $1150 bi weekly after taxes,Child support,Medical ins ect and on workers comp i bring home $816 bi-weekly which is damn near $350 difference a pay period......Just wanted to vent, It sucks that at 37 years old my career is over |

Ask your doctor about an implantable neurostimulator device. My company makes batteries for pacemakers and other implantable devices. At our recent company picnic we had a lady in who did a tesimonial on how an implantable device has rid her of chronic back pain. The company who made her device was ANS, a division of St. Jude Medical. Good luck man. |
You made 100K a year? |
Not to hijack this guys thread but I think 100K is quite common for cops that put in lots of OT. At least in NY it is. |
www.medtronic.com The company who invented spinal cord stimulation and controls most of the marketshare. Email me if I can help. I'm happy to hook you up with a world-known specialist in your area. Blake |
That's cool. And to the OP, that's life. Lots of shit happens to lots of good people, but have faith and trust in what your future holds. |
Prayers sent My mom had to have the same thing done to her back,If you see her you would never guess she had it done. You could always see if the would let you ride a desk (don't tase me) do dare stuff, public image things for the department. If you don't mind me asking what county do you work for? |

Careful with those opiate pain meds too...those fuckers can develop into some very bad times. I know its hard when you have a serious injury that causes severe chronic pain but your body becomes more and more dependent on that shit by the day. I had an opiate problem for almost 6 years that started with a back injury and ended up costing me a trip to detoxification and up to present day monthly trips to the doctor for expensive medication. Just keep your head on straight and watch you ass. Prayers sent |
Math... you must have failed at it. bi-weekly, every two weeks he brought home $1150 $1150 * 26 pay periods = $29,900 post tax $29,900 * 1.30 (30% tax braket) = $38,870 / year pre tax. |
Beat to the CORRECT ANSWER Not even close to 100k Good luck bro |

We have plenty of positions where we hire ex-cops that are hurt. There is plenty of lab/desk work where you could get in. A vocational change where your schooling would be paid for would help cover any education requirements, if you are lacking. Another person I know got hired as a firearm examiner for a federal agency ( ) This was after a shooting where he was seriously injured.

I'm 51. I had a career end at age 29 and another end at age 40. A back injury, knee injury, government sponsored foreign workers, an entire industry shipped overseas and the first gulf war ending the building of new gas stations are the reasons why, at least in my situation. Don't despair, as long as you've got a brain you can find new work and fresh challenges. |
A lot of people think 'bi-weekly' means twice a week.

Time to go back to school and try something new. Maybe this will make things better for you in the future. Good luck. I killed my arm in The Army, I am now in IT and make a good living. Think of this as a relax stage. Wheen off slow by the way. You may be a doper and not know it, I was. |
I had my spine fused at L5-S1 for a herniated disc. L4-L5 is still screwed up. My surgery at L5-S1 has failed because I took a job lifting heavy people. I have degenerative disc disease, nerve impingement, and a bulging disc at L4-L5. The surgery gave me a good 5 years almost totally pain free. Not anymore though. I suffer with pain now. I have a possibility of becoming paralyzed because of it. My dreams in life were to go to nursing school. It does not look like a reality for me right now. I work from home FT doing medical transcription. I did transcription for years before I decided to take the CNA job that messed my back up again. It kills me to sit, but it is way better than lifting and bending and walking all day. I am 28. I know what it is like to live day to day in pain. I have no insurance and no orthopedic doctors will treat me. I will tell you this however, when God shuts one door He opens another. Why don't you go through Vocational Rehab and become a probation officer. They make pretty good money and might be something that would interest you in your field of previous work. |

I understand what you are going through I'm the same age and only hold a G.E.D.. I quit school to pursue carpentry, (quick, good money) After 20 years of (i would venture to say) one of the most grueling jobs a person could choose, I blew 3 disks and am wondering wtf next? I have 2 kids, one just started high school. He is currently looking forward to choosing a college and I stay awake at night wondering how I'm going to put them through. I don't have any answers for you as I don't have any for myself. With the economy in shambles I cant even find enough work to sub out to other guys to do the physical work for me as I could handle the business end. I am pretty much in dipare as well.I'll pray for you, please remember me in prayer as well. I just thought it may help to realize your not alone. Mark |
Good luck. You'll have to put your mind to it, but if you've got a brain you can do well. |
Websters: bi·week·ly (b-wkl) adj. 1. Happening every two weeks. 2. Happening twice a week; semiweekly. ![]() I guess they would be correct in the terminology, but wrong in the assumption someone got paid twice a week. Sorry FoxCharlieActual. |
(don't tase me) do dare stuff, public image things for the department.
