I am changing the timing chain on a Ford 302 for my B.reak O.ut A.nother T.housand

The Seloc manual refers to a timing chain cover alignment tool???

If I don't guide the cover on exactly right, the oil seal will leak????

Can't find this tool for sale...do I even need it?

I think the tool resembles the snout of a balancer to make sure the cover is aligned. If I remember correctly most engines have alignment dowels anyway. That is, assuming the cover is from the same year as the engine block. (talking a fairly large gap in years).

It's just a guess on my part, though.

I've never used one , but I haven't worked on anything newer than the early model roller blocks ( 87 - 93 era )

Early cover in the Windsor series of engines have no dowel tubes around the second bolt in the block face counting up from the bottom on both sides. The newer engines do.

If you have the old style you don't need the tool just make sure the cover is prepared to be installed permanently , you know sealer, gasket and crankshaft seal, then place the cover on the engine and start but don't snug the top two bolts, the two short bolts right below the edge of the the intake manifold block rail. Then make sure it is up against the block all the way and install the harmonic balancer. When you get the balancer at least nearly all the way on, float the cover by hand a little and carefully so as not to impart any force against the seal snug up the top short bolts. You know the rest.

1977...but it is a boat motor...so it more like the 302 found in a '69 mustang (no emissions...built for leaded gasoline).
