[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Red Dawn? (Page 1 of 3)

| So I bought Red Dawn the other day at the DVD/music store as threats of my man card being revoked were flying around at work. So I watch it for the first time the other day (yes, I have never seen this movie before. no I do not live nor have i ever lived under a rock). I must say that while it was an OK movie, it wasn't the masturbatory epic like it seems people make it out to be. Am I missing something here? |
Many of us saw it when it was first in the theaters and we were near the age of the characters. Under those conditions, it made quite an impact. |
I will guess you were not a teenager during the 80's. It weems to resonate more with people who grew up during the cold war. JMHO YMMV |
Yup--I was in my early 20s and "lived" every moment of it as I watched. I'm a hunter too, so the grabbing of supplies and equipment was very realistic--but they forgot toilet paper. Being in the boonies is miserable without toilet paper.

The fact you didn't grow up as a Wolverine ...You merely watched the flick!...There is a big difference! |
|
I was 9 when the USSR collapsed. So I really didn't the whole Cold War stuff. The movie by today's standards is rather cheesy. All the lousy guns sounds, explosions, bad acting aside. I still think it's a damn good movie. I even bought it from Wally World the other day. |
i was waiting for that |

Did you watch it with your wife/girlfriend? Its supposed to be a cult classic like "Rocky Horror Picture Show" where you dress up like Aardvark while holding an AK-47 and yell "Wolverines" while standing on a coffetable in mismatched uniform patterns while your home theater system belts out the Basil Poledouris sountrack so loud it shakes photos off the walls. "Now get up here and piss in that radiator". I was too young to know what was going on, only vaguely knew what a "Russian" was, but still like the movie. Another of the few where the "bad guys" have marksmanship ability and everyone has to reload at some point. The cheese factor can be attributed to the (probably) low budget they had to work with-Forgivable if they make a good attempt, and the people involved here made a better than good attempt. |

It would have been a great movie if it came out in 1979 when Carter was screwing everything up. With President Reagan in office the movie was more of a good fantasy of what could have happened to some sheeple kids if Carter had been re-elected and given up all our nukes. I rate it better than "Hornets Nest" which had a similar plot but Nazi's as the bad guys, even though the former was more geared to kids and lacked Sylva Koscina adult action scenes. |

Red Dawn is a documentary sent back in time to help us prepare. That isn't Patrick Swayze, Chuck Norris put on a disguise to help out Pat's career. If Red Dawn were any more badass, people would actually die while watching. The movie Red Dawn is the only movie you need in your movie collection. Except for your Back-up Red Dawn dvds. Find me another movie that disparages Form 4473. Tell me that you've not been in a National Park out West and thinking at some point during your hiking trips: 'I bet a string of claymores in this tree line here would wipe out a whole Soviet column'. The secret ARFCOM ranch/training facility is located in Las Vegas, NM, where the film was shot. Oops. To be a Lifetime member on ARFCOM, you have to sit down and write every single line of Red Dawn down on paper, by hand, in one sitting, from memory. You're not a real ARFCOMmer unless you have watched Red Dawn with your AK and patted it reassuringly saying, "don't worry, one day you'll get to do that, too". Real ARFCOMmers play the Red Dawn soundtrack at their weddings instead of music. If you had never watched Red Dawn, then you would have never learned that hate doesn't burn you up,but instead, it keeps you warm. John has a long mustache. |
| I was in my early 20's when it came out. All the guys I knew at the time thought the movie was simply incredible. I guess it would make a difference depending on your age. I grew up with everything from duck and cover in grade school to even the Olympics being us against the commies. |
This person gets it! Although I'm proud that I fucked up on the love scene on my lifetime membership test |
|
It may have something to do with your age? As the film itself is aged (1984). Watching it recently it wasnt as good as it was in 84 for sure. Cinematography, special effects, etc have vastly improved since then. Im certain if you had viewed it in 1984 you would be part of the team |
Some people have a throw threshhold for their masturbatory/ I'm gonna save the world with my tricked out AR15 movie watching experiences. I WOULD be curious to see how a modern re-telling of the story with a proper director (like Ridley Scott, for instance) would look. I first caught this in the theatre during its original release; it hasn't stood up well to the test of time. |
THANK YOU!!!! |

My 7 year old daughter says to me earlier tonight: "Dad, can we watch a movie tonight?" "No, it's only an hour until bed time. Maybe this weekend." "I want to watch that training movie." ![]() She knows what's up. ![]() Seriously though, she was just pandering to me. She's a brilliant little girl. And she wants to go hunting with me this year. |
