ESET NOD32 or Smart Security (with firewall and spam blockers)

Works great. My brother whom is a computer tech at a computer place (he fixes the things people fuck up) uses NOD32 on all their systems, and it works great.

I paid for Kaspersky after going a long time with freebie stuff.   The AOL bundled version of Kaspersky was very good, and when they discontinued it, I went ahead and bought the commercial version.

Not to derail, but, I run Norton and it seems to mis stuff that PC housecall catches (Greyware and Malware). Would there be a conflict if I installed AVG and still had Norton running in the backgraound?

Since they only stop about 30% of malware, take your pick.

Best thing to do is keep you machine and your applications patched. (Don't forget adobe and flash etc.. Internets not a safe place.

And BTW you don't have to go to the Internets red light district to get p0wned. The latest round of XSS and SQL injection has compromised tons of legit sites. (see keep you trash patched above)

This is true....she still asks me how to cut & paste, attachments, and many other basic questions but the fact that I constantly have to check to make sure all of the "walls of protection" are in place. I'm not saying that Mac OS is completely immune to attacks by any means; it's just PC have a much higher problem with viruses and malware and other security issues. I don't know why people are still buying up PC's in this day in age when they seem so disposable compared to a Mac. Yes Mac's are more expensive but in the long run just the fact of the easiness of use pays for it over time.

The best one I've ever used is Symantec AV Corporate.

Now before you start in with the CoC violating attacks on my intelligence, I've used all the free AVs and every commercial AV on the market, and I am fully aware what a bloated P.O.S. the retail version of Norton AV is.  Plus if you ever want to totally fuck up a nice running PC, just install Norton Internet Security or Norton 360 and I guarantee that poor computer will be brought to an immediate screeching halt.

OTOH, Symantec AV Corp is lean & mean, does not bog down your system, and does a very good job at stopping and eliminating malware of all types.  Plus there's no serial number or activation, and Live Update never expires.  Ver. 10.1.x and lower for XP, and 10.2.x or higher for Vista.

When I look at Symantec's commercial and corporate products it just boggles my mind to think that these two came from the same company.  I cannot "disrecommend" the retail versions strongly enough.  But if you ever happen to somehow come across a copy of the corporate version, grab it!

I have to agree, my school gave me Symantec Corp. ed and I questioned whether or not I really wanted that garbage, but after I saw that it was completely different from the other version I found that it actually works great, however it is not free so it doesn't follow the OPs standards.

For free, I would go with AVG free.

The OP just asked what is your favorite AV, not free AV.  But since you asked, as a matter of fact SAV Corp. was free.

I had no problem with avg7.5, but I am not liking 8.0.  Plus, at least the other day, their downloads speeds on their server sucked.

Put Avast 4.8 on another PC, not sure I like it either.  Seems its got too much bs or something.  Maybe I am doing it wrong.  When I opened the anti-virus part of it, said 60 day trial or something, but its the free version.
