I have a old 94 Eclipse with a 5 speed, dinky little 1.8 liter. This is the first stick shift I had since I was a kid. The owners manual says to use Brake Fluid in the Manual Transmission. Is this a typo or is it legit? If it is a typo what do I use to fill it? Thanks |
I know that for my Hondas MTF is really nothing more than 5W-30, not sure about Mitsu though |
Don't start giving him ideas...just use the brake fluid. I've used it as recommended in my Honda Prelude and it is exactly as it was supposed to be. |
+1. The car I just traded in was a manual, and it used ATF in the transmission (it was RWD). It used brake fluid in the clutch reservoir. Under the hood, this would look like a small master cylinder. Never heard of using brake fluid IN the tranny. It (brake fluid) absorbs moisture rather quickly, and I would think would do little to no lubricating. |
I'm pretty sure you are not using brake fluid in the transmission, the clutches hydraulic lines yeah. |
Yeah I think that is what it would be called. Haven't had a stick in years and when I did I was too dumb to do more than change the oil. So I wasn't sure what it was called, and I thought brake fluid was a misprint. |
Brake fluid is gtg in the slave. |

The cap on the clutch reservoir should say which type of brake fluid it uses. Typically, the clutch reservoir is under the hood, next to the firewall on the driver's side. It's a single capped reservoir. The manual should tell you what signifies full. It's usually a line or a step on the reservoir. If your transmission itself is filled with fluid/oil, that typically doesn't need to be changed for the life of the vehicle. This is only applies to manual transmissions. |
