I'm sending a Money Order to a guy on Craigslist for an item I'm purchasing.

Nothing about the guy indicates scam, but I want to protect myself in case he isn't legit.

What should I do to keep from being ripped off?

face to face only.  if you mail money when buying through craigslist, you will probably get scammed.

Craigslist can yeild some good deals FACE TO FACE!!!!! I don't even bother searching outside of my local area due to scams. A good friend, just last week, learned this lesson the hard way cost him $750.

DON'T DO IT!!!!!

There's really no way to mitigate the risk when sending money like that.  In theory if you figured out the scam quick enough you could stop payment but that's about it.

He was trying to sell it locally.  Says he's never sold anything out of state online.  Even asked me how it works... was he supposed to ship first then I pay, or vice versa.

I'm good at sniffing out scams and this guy seems legit.
