"Nearly all of world population growth is now concentrated in the world's poorer countries," said Bill Butz, president of the Population Reference Bureau, an independent research organization. Currently 1.2 billion people live in countries classified as developed by the United Nations, compared with 5.5 billion in less developed regions, PRB said in its annual Population Data Sheet, released Monday. There is little growth - even decline - in the richer countries. "And by 2050, global population is projected to rise to 9.3 billion. Between now and mid-century, these diverging growth patterns will boost the population share living in today's less developed countries from 82 percent to 86 percent," said PRB demographer Carl Haub. Other findings from the data sheet: _Some 35 percent of the population in the least developed countries is undernourished, and that rises to 60 percent in some sub-Saharan countries. _One in 75 women died of pregnancy-related causes in less developed countries. In developed countries, the rate of maternal death is one in 6,000. _Lifetime fertility is 5.4 children per woman in sub-Saharan Africa and 4.7 in the least developed countries. Well, duh! With social/economic development comes access to birth control and education. With prosperity comes a realization that you should only have as many kids as you can afford to keep healthy and happy plus a certain amount of selfishness from the benifits of having less kids thus having more time & resources for yourself. With underdeveloped societies people live ignorant of PLANNED preganancy and continue to fuck like rabbits in fear of pissing-off their "God" by not having enough boy babies or good Christians, Hindus, Muslims, whatever and a woman has ten babies and hopes a few will survive to adulthood. The primeval species success strategy of procreate til its raw wins out over intelligent thought and self-determination every time in the scheme of human evolution. Eventually, humans will over-burdon the Earth and nature will take steps to rectify the condition (plague, famine, pestilence, war and/or ethnic-cleansing - all EARTH's Choice) Maybe the Dolphins will get the next chance to get it right

I'll be the first to admit that I'm a bit jaded from working/living in third-world shitholes but the capacity of humans to screw up their lives and the lives of everyone and everything around them [ETA] AND BE REWARDED never ceases to amaze me. |
