I'd like to put the speakers from my old shelf system to good use. I hacked up some audio wires & tried hooking them up to the headphone port on various items, but that did nothing.

They have the standard copper wires you can buy at radio shack attached to them. Obviously I could get another shelf system & hook them up to that, but I'd like to use these for parties outside or my garage.

So why not re-wire them as remotes to whatever amp unit you have and run the wires through the attic or under the carpet/contour the base board?  I am assuming the speakers still work and sound decent.

Yes, they still work.

My floors are not carpet & my garage is detached. I also do not have a seperate amp

The headphone jack only puts out a low-level signal - much too weak to power speakers.

If they're decent speakers, why not pick up an old stereo receiver to use with them? Lots of stuff made back in the 70's is available for cheap on ebay, Craig's list and at local thrift stores - Would be great for listening to FM or talk radio in the garage, or plugging in an ipod or cheap CD player.
