How do you determine which eye is dominant?

Grab a sheet of paper and punch a quarter size hole in it.

Hold it out at arms length, focus both eyes on something visible through the hole and slowly pull it toward your face while maintaining sight of the object.
The eye that the hole ends up in front of is your dominant eye.

Thanks I'll give it a try.

ETA: Ok, it switches eyes?

ETA: What happens when the hole ends up being between both your eyes when you pull the sheet of paper back?

You are part cyclops.

No, the paper blurred and I could still see the light switch across the room. I tried it several times after and it switched between my right and left eye almost every time.

ETA: The reason I posted this topic is because I have heard of the method of pointing as a distant object and then closing an eye to determine your dominant eye, however when I use that method it switches eyes them same as the paper with a hole method.

Point at a distant object, close an eye to determine which you're lining up with.

An even simpler way is this:

  1. Get someone to watch you shoot - or to watch you doing dry-fire practice.

  2. Ask that person to watch which eye you are using.

  3. Simply pick up your firearm (or anything with sights) and start shooting or dry-firing.

  4. Ask the observer which eye you were using.

My brother is left-eye dominant, but right-handed.  I found out by noticing that he was firing right-handed, but using his left eye.  When he shoots, I just have him close his left eye so he is forced to use his right eye.

I'm kind of a special case.  I'm right-handed, but left-eye dominant because I'm blind in my right eye.  So I've simply taught myself how to shoot left-handed.

Better way. Thanks.

My right eye's 20/20.  I cannot read what's on the screen with my left.  Take a guess which is dominant.

If you're right-handed, then things are pretty simple for you.

Even simpler, make a circle with your hands and look at a doorknob across the room. Close one eye and then the other and see which eye the door knob stays in.

I'm right handed and left eye dominate. When I switched to my left eye shooting a pistol my scores improved dramatically. I still shoot long guns with my right eye though.
