They are claiming they are having shipping and receiving problems. They have not shipped new movies from many locations since 8-11-08. Or processed returns recieved 8-12 or later. Its a hell of a coincedence that they are having this computer glitch now. a couple weeks before they have to upgrade long term members to a 4-per month plan under court order because of throttling. |
|
Yeah I am in the same boat. I'm on the 3-a-month plan and managed to get my 3 DVDs returned on Monday (right before the "problems" started). We'll see how things work out ... I'm not ticked off by the wait just yet but if it persists for more than a week or two, then ..... |
I agree. There is some bullshit going on. They said they shipped my movie on 8/08 and it's 8/15 and I haven't gotten it. Kevin "Hinky." |

Netflix shipping woes mean delays for DVDs wire Article Launched: 08/14/2008 12:53:04 PM PDT Netflix, the DVD rental service, is suffering from the biggest shipping problem in its history, delaying delivery of those familiar red-and-white envelopes to millions of its customers. The Los Gatos-based company Thursday told its 8.5 million subscribers that it had been experiencing "severe technical issues" that had prevented it from mailing movies and TV shows. The problems began Monday night and halted all shipments Tuesday. On Wednesday, the company was able to send about half the discs subscribers had ordered from its 55 U.S. distribution centers. "It's comprehensive, and it's affecting our entire nationwide distribution systems," Netflix spokesman Steve Swasey said. The problem, which he wouldn't identify, has prevented delivery to about one-third of the company's members, or about 2.8 million subscribers, who have sent discs back and are awaiting their next shipments, he said. In a message on its home page, Netflix said, "We apologize, and we'll be automatically issuing credits to all of you whose shipments have been delayed. Our goal is to ship DVDs as soon as possible and to provide a personalized e-mail update to you if your DVD shipment was delayed." Netflix, which ships about 2 million discs a day, has missed shipments only one other time since it launched in September 1999. That delay occurred in March. Netflix then issued a 5 percent credit in monthly fees to members whose discs were delayed by one day -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Advertisement -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- and a 10 percent credit for shipments that were delayed for two or more days. This time, the company hasn't yet determined how it will make it up to its members. "There's no set formula because this is only the second time in our company's history that we've missed our shipping date," Swasey said. So far, the delay hasn't cost Netflix much in the way of consumer satisfaction, said Michael Pachter, an analyst with Wedbush Morgan Securities. "Most people aren't sitting by their mailboxes on a Wednesday or Thursday waiting for their Netflix movies," he said. Netflix currently has no estimate of when its technical difficulties will be resolved. "We have hundreds of engineers working round the clock to fix this problem," Swasey said. |
I realize that it's entirely possible they may be delaying until the 11th hour, but that's their decision. I've used them for a while and it kinda ticks me off too that they might do this but oh well. I fully realize they are throttling me. I guess the point I'm trying to make is if you are so upset over this, then stop subscribing to them and give someone else your $$. |

I havent received a movie since 8-12 and they have all been returned. They would have been received by netflix by today at the latest. they have not processed any returns. it will be monday ealiest before they start shipping IMO. Cut everybody off for a week and it makes up for the extra movies they have to ship next month. |
Isn't this at least the second thread you've made bitching about Netflix? Like I said, if you're so dissatisfied with them, then take your business elsewhere. |
|
Netflix is a great service, I don't care if they throttle me a little. I still get 10-15 movies a month from them, some in Blu Ray, and it's cheap as hell for the service provided. Good for them! A relation of mine watches movies online from them, he likes that part of the service even more than getting the discs in the mail |
Folks that had the three at a time service would get three movies then ship them back the next day, lather, rinse, repeat. After a while of doing this Netflix would start to take a day or two extra to send you your next movies out instead of turning them right away. |
You return a movie Monday, they receive it tuesday but wait until wednesday or thursday to aknowledge its return. You return a movie monday, they admit receiving it tuesday but put your next movie in "processing" status until wednesday or thursday. You return a movie thursday, they recive it friday but wait until monday to ship the next movie. anything to artificially slow the shipment process and save on shipping costs. |
If you watch your movie and drop it back in the mail the same day consistently, they start sitting on your shipments for a while. I don't care too much. I don't think there's that many great movies out there to watch in any case. $15 a month is pocket change, I have movies laying around the house 99% of the time, it works out great for me. |
That pretty much sums it up. But there are a variety of methods they use to achieve that goal. |
fixed it |

I joined Netflix about six months ago and have not had any problems til now. Just logged in to check, looks like the problem is fixed: Our Shipping Centers Are Mailing DVDs Delayed DVD Shipments Are Being Sent Today (Friday) Click here to learn more We’re happy to report that all of our shipping centers are resuming normal operations (after 3 days of issues). If you should have been shipped a disc Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, it will ship today (Friday). We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused. To all of you whose shipments have been delayed, we’ll be automatically applying a 15% credit to your next billing statement. Or, if you are new to Netflix and your first shipments have been delayed, we recognize that this is not a good way to begin your Netflix membership and we’ll automatically extend your free trial by a week. Again, we apologize for the delay and thank you for your understanding. The Netflix Team |
That's a pretty big assumption Ghost Rider... I have friends who were throttled that don't even own a home computer. As hard as that is to fathom in this day and age. A lot of people wouldn't even have a clue what software to use to rip encryption. Yes, most of us here probably know, and there are no doubt many who used this service did just that... but its a pretty broad brush stroke to imply everyone and quite honestly it doesn't matter. Netflix did not fulfill their obligations. |
It didn't matter what service you plan you paid for. If you turned your movies around too quickly, eventually Netflix would started stalling. They used various ploys, the most insidious of which was the dreaded perpetual "Very Long Wait." I've had new releases that took six-eight months to receive while my neighbor who was lax about returning movies, and had a one-at-a-time plan, would get the same movie immediately. Despite throttling, however, Netflix is still the best deal around. If I want something new I get it from Redbox. |
I'd say your non-DVD-ripping friends are the exception. Four-at-a-time plan here and I'm very satisfied. |
Yeah if look at some of the older threads on throttling you'll see that I was pretty hard on Netflix about throttling but yeah I believe to get movies turned around that fast there was quite a bit of copying going on |

www.hackingnetflix.com/ Netflix Shipping Problems Fixed -- Customer to Get 15% Credit Netflix has fixed the shipping problems that plagued the company for the past 3 days, and will be issuing a 15% credit to customers. The following update was posted to the Netflix Community Blog: Let’s get right to it. This morning, we’re happy to report that all of our shipping centers are resuming normal operations after experiencing three days of significant issues. Throughout the night and as we post this update, our distribution centers are processing customer orders and getting them into the mail. If a member should have been shipped a disc Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, with rare exception it will ship today (Friday). As a result, millions of our members will receive DVDs on Saturday, in time (we hope) for some weekend movie enjoyment. But we know that’s not enough. The service interruption we experienced this week inconvenienced many of our members and put us in the awful position of disappointing people. So we’re taking added measures. For all members whose shipments have been delayed, we’ll be automatically applying a 15% credit to their next billing statement. Or, for new members whose first shipments have been delayed, we’ll automatically extend their free trial by a week. Rest assured that we are taking aggressive steps to fully understand the root cause of this week’s problems and safeguard against issues like these in the future. For now, we’re just happy to be able to get back to doing what we love most – delighting our customers. Again, most sincere apologies and thanks for your understanding. August 15, 2008 |
I don't doubt that there is, but the response was an illegal breach of contract to address a possible illegal action by the consumer. That is my problem. Netflix assumed the customer was crooked and punished accordingly. I know a lot of folks who don't even have cable, leave in the country and can barely get broadcast reception. They rent movies to entertain their families and were punished by Netflix for what their assumed behavior was. |
There are four people in my house and three dvd players. I usually get a movie for me, one for my wife and one for my kids. Wife usually watches and returns same day. Kids next day. Me first day off. We usually get about 5-6 movies a week. If they were timely on the turn around we would be able to watch 9-10 a week. This last week we got 2 movies. I dont watch televison. If i hear about a good show i wait and order the whole season on DVD from netflix. As a result netflix actually loses money on our account. (actually its been said they lose money on any account that gets more than 5 movies a month) |
| I can't believe anyone is still giving their money to this shady company … after the last "Problem" they had, the long standing policy of throttling members who turned their movies around too quickly and the class action lawsuit … You guys that are still with them must be waiting for the CEO of Netflix to actually get caught banging your sister. |
Seriously? I just got bumped up to the 4-movie per month plan (as part of the class action settlement) and I had a movie shipped out to me today (which was returned yesterday). Are you sure it's not just your distribution center? Edit: my queue is fine, not showing many Very Long Wait movies ... and I have close to 500 movies in my queue. |
|
Dunno about the conspiracy; I'm guessing it's what they say: a computer-system issue. I have a VERY fast turnaround on my movies, trust me, and the movies I mailed in yesterday at noon were received today, and the new ones are on their way and will get here tomorrow. |
We mailed back three yesterday. They admit to receiving one. one replacement "shipping today." The other 49 movies in my que...."very long wait" |
Everything in my Queue says available now. I turn around movies twice a week generally depending on the day they get to me. Of course at one point I had the same 3 movies for 6 months. That was awhile ago though.

|
It appears that they underestimated a key player - the USPS. I had the $10 a month 1 at a time plan, but it took 7 days for a round trip, and 25% of the movies were scratched so bad they wouldn't play. I dropped them after I finished the Arfcom Required Movie list. |
