My parents have always told me I need to stand up straight, but whenever I've tried I just get tired and go back to slouching whether consciously or sub-consciously. The other day I saw myself in a mirror from a weird angle and realized my posture really is pretty bad.
Anyone have any tips on proper posture/ improving posture (both sitting and standing).

Hopefully I can avoid looking like Quasimodo if I work on improving it now.

I had terrible posture before I started working out. Now my posture is pretty good. Not sure what exercises in particular did it for me, but I'd imagine those involved with shoulders, abs, and back.

Hmm, the same laziness that prevents me from standing up straight also prevents me from wanting to go to the gym regularly. Sometimes my roommate will convince me to go with him for a while, but I don't last that long. If it was something I could do at home (like pushups/ situps) I'd be more apt to keeping it up cause it wouldn't be as much of a hassle.

Same.  I had a girl I really like comment that I had bad posture the other day.  Now I'm constantly trying to stay aware and keep it corrected.

I guess you are a high speed low drag body type

I have the same problem but as I lose wieght my posture is improving. Situps and pushups will help. But I would seriously suggest a good gym routine 2x a week for 1.5 hours a day will do wonders for you. And you can out run the zombies

Let me see if I can say this without coming across as creepy or weird.

I go to the gym and workout all the time.  I love it, but lifting weights, and cardio can sometimes get boring.  To get through the boredom, I observe peoples posture.

Posture tells a lot about peoples strengths and weaknesses.  For example, there are a lot of women that have shoulders that are curved like a bow.  This is caused by the muscles in the chest being stronger than the back muscles, causing the curvature.  Slouching in front of a monitor all day will cause you to have that hunched over look.  Overall, bad posture is caused by muscle imbalances.

Now, if  you have shitty posture, and want to work on it, you might just pickup a 6' piece of 6" plastic pipe, and a couple of caps for it.  Fill it up part way with gravel, and put the caps on.  Hoist it up on your shoulders and then keeping your back straight bend over at the waist to 90 degrees, then back up straight.  You also want to keep the front strong too, so do some situps.

Have someone take a picture of you from the side, when you are not looking.  Evaluate what you see.

Well, maybe I will try going again. I'm not fat, I just lack upper body muscle / definition. I think my skinny arms accentuate my bad posture.

I'm 6'1" and 160 lbs.

have you had a physical lately?  it could be physical issue?  do you hurt if you stand straight?

bad habbits are hard to break.

there were some chairs that would force you into a correct posture, but dont know the long term affects.

Then start hitting the gym 2x a week. Situps and pushups will help. But their is no substitute for real weight lifting

No recent physical, don't think it's a physical issue. It doesn't hurt if I stand/ sit up straight but my muscles slowly fatigue/ become uncomfortable.

Goto the gym and work your shoulder and back.... I used to slouch too, until the Army kicked my ass out of doing it.
