The wife has decided she wants to replace all of the counters in the kitchen and baths (I agree) with either granite (I don't agree $$$$$$$$$$) or concrete (I am listening).

I bought a book a couple months ago about building them, because the prices I got from a couple of local contractors made my A-hole snap shut. It's mold-making and pouring concrete for freaking sakes.

Anyone ever tackled this?

Never done it myself, but I have a distant relative who does it pretty often (for hire, of course) and he makes it look great.

Needless to say, he's not cheap.

Based on what little of his work I've seen, it's not the sort of thing I'd tackle on my own. YOu, of course, may be more skilled at home improvement than I.

Yes.

It turned out like ASS.

The customer loved it.

The floor sagged and the cabinets moved.

The finish is not durable.

The customer loved it.

I'll never do it again.

Check out Cambria.  I have it.  It doesn't scratch or stain (granite and red wine don't mix).  It's also non pourous so it's food safe and heat resistant up to like 400*.   It's basically crushed quartz mixed with a hardening epoxy.  It's about $10/sqft cheaper than your average granite, though granite can range from $20/sq to $1,000/sq.

Supposed to chip and stain easily.

I'd worry about the weight and staining.

Want a concrete counter top?  Go look at your garage floor.

Does not appeal to me AT ALL.  DIY concrete countertop sounds like a recipe for disaster.
