Not everything. AVG Free is still a good product. However your view does fit Zone Alarm pretty friggin well.

What amazes me is the instant "Get a hardware firewall" response.

Typical home firewalls prevent stuff from coming inbound to you computer. Great yay. Awesome. However, you really need to watch the outbound connections your computer is making and which programs are making them and who they are talking to. Zone alarm and other firewalls did this and popped up (a sometimes annoying) notification for this.

A home hardware firewall is not going to do this. So if you get a virus that goes out and downloads additional components the hardware firewall isn't going to care and will permit it as it is normal HTTP traffic. However, the firewall software on your machine is going to popup a notification because an unknown program is attempting to establish a connection.

download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/1025_update/zaSetup_en.exe

I used to use Zonealarm but switched to a Linux system so its not something I use anymore.

ETA:  And I'm running a free Debian based Linux distribution.  Open source is nice for personal use.
The only issue is when you do something like Linksys did and write firmware with an open source language,
and then claim its a proprietary secret.   Doh!
